Technical Drill

Key Factors

The purpose of this session is to encougae players to move into optimal positions to receive the ball, to work on their passing range and accuarcy and imporve first touch and receiving options. Focus on:

- Players receiving on the back foot.

- Positive first touch

- Players passing into the space just infornt of the receiver.

Organisation

Set up 2 squares roughly 15/18 yards lenth and width (this can be adapted for the age and number of players.

Split the players into two teams, 1 team per square.

2/3 players start inside the square with a ball. They must then pas the ball to an outside player, move to create an angle to receive on the back foot and then receive the ball back from the outside player (just in front of them). Play for 1 minutes and then rotate the players, ensure each player has 3 sets inside the square.

Progression:

- Possession players play a 1-2 with the outside player before playing a pass to a different player.

Possession Game

Key Factors

The purpose of this drill is to develop the players ability to pass the ball accurately in tight spaces whilst under pressure from an opponent.

Focus on:

- Finding the spare players

- Movement to create passing angles

- Quality of the passing

- Also focus on players winning the ball back and pressing as a group

Organisation

Use the same two squares as the previous drill, with the players split into the same 2 teams.

All the players start inside the square. The coach starts with a collection of balls and the session starts with the coach. The coach plays a ball into one of the squares. As soon as the receiving player touches the ball, 3 players from the opposite square sprint across to try and win the ball back. The possession team try and get 10 passes to score a goal.

Once the possession is dead, the coach plays a ball into the other square and the drill repeats.

Repeat and keep score to a set amount, for example for to 10 goals.

Possession Game 2

Key Factors

The purpose of this drill is to ensure players are being exposed to a large number of options and are developing their ability to move the ball quickly and sharpen up their passing technique. Focus should be on:

- Finding the spare players

- Movement to create passing angles

- Quality of the passing

- Also focus on players winning the ball back and pressing as a group

Organisation

Set up a rectangle area that is suitbale for the age and number of players. Split the players into two equal groups but include within this 2 common players. In this animation this creates a 5v5+2. If you have an odd number either use 3 common players or 1 depeding on how well your players are able to complete the session. The aim of the game is ball retention, with a goal issued for every 6 passes made. The common players play for the team in possession, if teball goes out, possession is turned over.

Each set will last 4 to 6 minutes with the following conditions:

- All in

- 2 touch max

- 1 touch max

Possession Game 3

Key Factors

This drill is a progression of the previous drill and looks more closely at the transition when the ball is won. The key factors of the previous drill remain, but in this drill, once the ball is won back, the focus is on scoring a goal.

Organisation

Use th same area as used for he previous drill but include two goals at either end wit 2 goalkeeprs (use mini goals and first time finishes if keeper unavilable). In this drill, one team starts as the possession team and plays 7v5 using the common players. The possession team must just keep the ball for as long as possible.

The team it 5 must work hard to win the ball back. When they win the ball they must look to combine to create a goal scoring opportunity in either of the goals. Once the move has finished the drill is repeated with the roles reversed (ensure you rotate the common player)

Introduce conditions on the possession team if you wish.

Play 4/5 sets of 4 minute games.
