Shadow play exercise teaching basic defensive technique (stay in front of the defender, athletic position defensively).
Attacker dribbles at defednder taking quick touches left and right. Defender doesn't try to win the ball, just shaddows the attacker until they have reached the other side of the grid. After they have dribbled to the endline; players switch roles and go the other direction.
Progression: Attacker tries to beat the defender; defender can steal the ball. If the attcker makes it across they get 1 pt and continue as attacker. If defender forces them out of bounds or wins the ball they start from the neares side as the attacker.
Coaching points:
- When to win the ball - On a mistake (bad touch, ball in air, attacker turns his back)
- Good defensive techinique (knees bent, feet just outside of shoulders, side on)

You always end you turn as the defender. Ball starts with the attacking team on the dribble. Two players attack the goal once the ball is scored, stolen or ball goes out of bounds the opposing teams next two players start the ball on the dribble and the two attacking players become the defenders. Then repeat.
Coaching points:
- Quick transition to defending
- Taking passing/shooting angles away
- Getting pressure/support to the ball
- Communication to stay organized (especially from GK's)

Play is not over until each team has had a turn to attack. 3v2 to goal. Play is not over until ball is scored, stolen or goes out of bounds. Once the 1st ball goes out of bounds, the player that last touches it must go off. Coach will roll a new ball in for the other team and play 2v2 to the other goal. Once the 2nd ball goes out of bounds the play is over and all players return to the back of the line.
Coaching Points:
- Take one option away with pressuring player to make game even numbers
- Supporting player shouldn't man mark. Help the pressuring defender.
- Quick transitions to defending.
- Encourage blocked shots when necessary

5v5 (4 Gates Dribble thru)
Start out with a 15 minute game and adjust numbers/size of field as needed. I usually play two/three 4 minute games. In between each game I will introduce the topic or get 1-2 coaching points, in between each game, based on the changes that are needed. If no small goals, use 4v4, 7v7, 9v9 goals or gates.
To score you must dribble through the gate.
