Goal of the session is to train the back four to better cover for each other in the final third when one of the four steps forward to pressure the ball. In our previous match, the ball was often in our end and we struggled to hold our shape and we did not cover well when we stepped to pressure. This resulted in a number of times the opponent's attacker was able to beat one defender and get an open shot and a number of times when through balls were played through our line in the space vacated when we stepped to pressure the ball.

Cones are used to construct 4 lanes, one for each defender in the 4-player back line. Defenders(red team) set up at top of box. Blue team consists of 2 midfielders at the half line and 4 attackers 2/3 of the way to the top of the box from the half line, one in front defender facing back toward the mids. Each midfielder has a ball. Midfielders feed the ball to each attacker in turn(A,B,C,D). Each defender will step to pressure the attacker as they receive the balls. The other 3 defenders slide and drop within their lanes to cover for the defender that has stepped forward. The goaltender also slides to match the angle of a potential shot. The attacker then passes the ball back to the midfielder. The pattern repeats with the next attacker. Emphasize defenders covering the gap in the line caused when a teammate steps to pressure and returning to original shape when attackers plays the ball back.

Retain set up from previous activity. Now each time a midfielder plays a ball in, they choose one of the four attackers at random. The blue team then attacks until they get a shot off or the red team clears the ball from danger. Reset positions and play again. Emphasize need to reach the attacker before they can turn and face and to pressure hard when attackers are in a position where they can shoot. Force the attackers to play backwards or wide.
