Switch the Play Rondo.

2 Defenders against a team in possession in one half. 1 or 2 link players in the middle zone. Another possession team in the other half who are inactive to start with but should remain engaged and be prepared to receive the ball. Ensure you have good positioning. Objective to switch the play as much as possible using the link players. Link players only have one touch. Defenders stay in for 1 minute.

Key Objectives:

Attacking team should look to make good combinations and find the link men to play out of pressure. Link men should have open body position to play across quickly.

Defensive players should look to make play predictable close down quickly and be aggressive.

Part 3 (15 mins)

3 v 2 Conditioning.

Keeper distributes the ball out to one of the 3 attackers. The defenders then sprint out from the goal line and try and stop the 3 attackers from scoring. Offsides are in play. When the attack finishes (shot, tackle, ball out of play) then the 3 attackers sprint to the pole behind the goal. The two defenders then sprint up to the poles and complete the course at the other end.

Key Objectives:

During attacking moments it is about attacking and exploiting the space and finding the spare man. Commit defenders and release the ball when it is appropriate. There is no need to risk losing the ball in a 1 v 1 duel when you can find the spare man who can then go against the Goalkeeper with less pressure.

From a defensive point of view the players should look at delaying for as long as possible, try and make play predictable and winning the ball if an attacker takes poor touch. The goalkeepers communication is vital here. He can effectively make this a 3 v 3 but obviously he must try and avoid leaving his goal too exposed too early. If he communicates well he can tell the defenders where to force the play and leave the spare man and he can try and control him if the ball gets to that area.
