4v1 Two teams. 1 minute rounds. Each team sends a new defender over to the opponents grid each round. Let all 5 players be the defender once or twice based on time. The objective for the team in possession is to make 6 passes = 1 pt (however many passes necessary based on the skill level). The objective for the one defender is to intercept a pass and score in the small goal or pass the ball back to the coach = 1pt (If to difficult make it 2 or 3 pts). The 4 players on the outside are allowed to defend the pass to goal or coach, but most move close to the line. If the ball goes out of bounds, then coach will start a new ball for the group. If you have 5 extra players make a 3rd grid, but if less than 5 extra players rotate them in, turn square in to a pentagon (so 5 sides/player on each side) or let players sitting out restart the ball.
After each round is a good opportunity to gather balls, get a coaching point or even go through a stretch (If not done during the warmup). Note: At the younger ages, it's important to limit the amount of coaching points each time the game is stopped. Something I still struggle with and try to be aware of throughout the entirety of the session.
Coaching points:
- Proper Receiving/Passing Technique - Heel/Down Toe/Up Ankle Locked
- When where and how to move without the ball? Moving to find passing windows.
- Playing with our head up (looking to find where teammates, defender or player in open space is).
- Receiving the ball across our body with the 'furthest' foot
- Good reactions to win the ball back if the team in possession has lost the ball

30x20 yards. Adjust as needed or preferred.
6v2 Transition Game. 2-3 minutes/rounds then switch. Play 2-4 Rounds with each team playing both roles based on time. Objective for the team in possession is to make 5 passes or split the 2 defenders, which equals 1 point (Players can move anywhere inside the grid). The two defenders try to win the ball and score in the goal = 2 pts if they score. If the ball has been scored in a goal or goes out of bounds the coach will roll a new ball out for the team in possession (blue in diagram). The next two defenders (yellow in diagram) cannot enter the grid until the 1st two defenders have exited off the field.
Coaching Points:
- Understanding how much space/time we have?
- Are we giving multiple options for teammates?
- Recognzing where the open player in the most space is.
- Looking to 'find splits' - Introduction to 'breaking lines'

Each side of Heaxagon is 15-18 yards apart based on level. Adjust as needed/preferred.
Each team has 3 target players and 3 players on the inside (can make 4 players inside based on numbers or add neutral players). Target players must stay behind the imaginary line, but can move from cone to cone. Players on the inside can NOT go outside the grid and steal the ball from targets. Every time the ball goes out coach will start a new ball.
Every time you connect passes to 2 different targets in the SAME POSSESSION = 1 pt
When the opposition wins the ball they try to play to their teams target players. Either team can pass as many times as they would like to other teammates on the inside of the grid.
Coaching Points:
- Spacing and Movement is crucial to complete the objective.
- Receiving the ball so our hips are open to the field.
- Introduction to receiving the ball on the 1/2 turn.
- Recognizing where teammates, defenders and/or space is.
- How can target players help with movement?

60x40- Make a field big enough to play 5v5, 6v6 or 7v7. Add a neutral player if odd number.
Placing the goals 5 yards off the field not only forces them to make a pass in to a goal regardless of situation, but can also help with a defender not just standing directly in front of the goals. Place goals as you prefer them. Coach can restart the balls.
Coaching Points:
- Are we drifting to the ball?
- Introduction to the roles of the positions
- CB's stepping up to midfield when the ball is in the opponents half.
- Spacing the field quickly when our team gains possession of the ball.

Warm Up
As players arrive and to start training have players get in groups of 2-3 and they can pass the ball amongst one another. Give them an opportunity to get warmed up and get some touches on the ball. During this process will be a good time for them to get to know 1-2 people. As they progress and continue encourage players to now pass and move every time they have passed to someone. This may be a good opportunity to lead them through a light stretch as well. Also a good opportunity for players to work on basic technique of passing.
