Description

What: Switching the point of attack: not playing the ball back where you received it from.

Who: Central midfielder (#6)

Where: The middle third playing into the attacking third.

When: Trying to deny the opposition to get set up behind the ball, play out of tight situations, expose the weak side and create overloads.

Why: The central midfielder is the pivot by which the play will look to utilize the entire field as much as possible, and stretch the opposition, creating gaps, in a way which gives the attacking players more time and space on the ball to try and penetrate.

2 v 2 + 2 Buffers Each Team (15 mins)

Organization: 20 x 30 yard grid. Adjust size depending on if more players. Key is to exaggerate the width to encourage the switch of play.

Instructions: Players in the middle are looking to find the players on the outside. Buffer players are mobile along the sides of the field, and if played to they enter the field, and the player who played the ball to them takes their spot.

Coaching Points: -Open body positioning when checking to the ball.

-Receive with back foot, play with other foot (2-touch technique).

-As ball is coming approaching, play a one touch pass to the other side using the inside part of your back foot (1 touch technique).

-Communicate whether you want the ball to feet or to space (applies to the buffer as well).

-Look to lay off a pass for your teammate to hit one time, as opposed to trying to always do change the play yourself, play off of each other.

Progressions: -Buffers are stationed at the corners. Passes need to be more precise, however this brings out the natural angles which create good open body positioning when looking to switch the play.

-Balls (specify) to neutrals must be played either on the ground or in the air.

-Opposing buffer can try to intercept the pass being played into a buffer.

Regressions: -Each team plays from buffer to buffer independently, being aware not to collide with other group (semi-opposed).

Possession (Grid Broken into 4 Boxes) (20 mins)

Organization: Entire width of the field, length is from top of the penalty box to midfield; This entire area is split into four equal zones.

Instructions: Possession game, only way to score points is by playing into a new box. Score can also be kept by streak, not necessarily by accumulation because the idea is that once the opposition is exploited, it will be very difficult for them to regain possession. Make three teams, and rotate the team defending with the other two working together.

Coaching Points: -One player must always be an outlet pass. (Above, that would be player in Box C)

-Player checking to the ball must do so with body positioning facing where they will play to. Be aware; head up constantly checking over your shoulder.

-Create a quick combination, then get the ball out. "1, 2, out...1, 2, out..." otherwise the pressuring group will be able to swarm.

-Sometimes the long ball to switch is the only option, head looking far will also see what is close; if just looking close, you are preventing yourself from seeing what is farther away.

Progressions: -2 Touches max each player.

-No more than three passes in one box.

-2 Teams only. (If odd number in group, can still have one neutral)

Regressions: -3rd Team can be utilized as neutrals around the permiter of the box. If played to, the neutral must play to a fellow neutral on either their left or right side (still along the permiter of the box) before being allowed to play back into the grid. This consists of a point. Note that this version does not require the area to be split into four equal boxes, however still facilitates the effect of switching the point of attack.

Attack 2, Defend 2 (Central Channel) (30 mins)

Organization: 35 x entire width of the field.

Instructions: Attack two, defend two however if the ball is played into the central channel, it must then be played into the opposite side of the field. For instance, if the ball is played into the central channel from the left side, the player on the ball must look to play into the right-sided channel of the field.

Coaching Points: -Player on the weak side is active, utilizing the entire width ready to either make a run, check to the ball, or provide supporting depth as an outlet.

-Central midfielder is always providing depth of support to be able to have open body positioning and play to the opposite side.

-If central midfielder wants to join the attack and create an overload, check to the ball quickly and look to combine: Players do not have to use the central channel

Progressions: -Two touches.

-One extra pass maximum allowed in the middle channel before playing to weak side.

Regression: -Make central channel thinner and allow only the central midfielders from each team to play inside of it; no other players can enter.

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Scrimmage

Scrimmage (25 mins)

Organization: If playing seven-a-side set teams up in 2-3-2 formation so that when looking to switch the point of attack the central midfielder has an option to try and penetrate, and the weak side midfielder to either play a square pass to or in on a through ball as well.

Instructions: FIFA rules.

Coaching Points: All as listed above.

Progressions: -Ball cannot enter the midfield circle on the ground. Players can run through it, but the ball cannot be played within it. This is to force quicker switches of play and encourage longer driven passes which inhibit the opposition from shifting and resetting as easily.
