Football/Soccer Session (Academy Sessions): Return to Play - Non Contact/Contact Adaptable Counter Attack
Description
- Session to break ice/return to training.
- Introduce Key Facets of Counter Attacking. (Movement with ball, direct attacking, pass forward/run forward, teamwork, effective first touches to avoid breakdown and counter press)

Drill (10 mins)
Setup
- Introducing key elements of counter - Travelling with the ball, speed of movement, beating opponents.
Practice
- Dribble with ball through opposite cones with ball - Weight of touch, speed of runs.
- Shaded Area - Action Zone
Progression(s)
- 1- Skill move before line (Players Choice)
- 2- Skill move and pass to player in next line (Emphasis on quality first touches, weight of pass, Importance of team work)
- 3- Add in more active players.
- 4- Competition between defence and attack

Counter Drill 2 (10 mins)
Setup
- 8x8 yard squares marked with cones on each corner.
Players in pairs on side line, 1 player (attacker) with ball & 1 player without the ball
(defender). CONES 2M APART, A CONE FOR EACH PLAYER TO START ON
Practice
- Players must start 2m apart
Defender cant move until the attacker touches the ball
Attacker dribbles and tries to beat the defender to the end line
Defender runs and races to the line but doesn’t tackle
The coach should number the pairs 1, 2, 3. When coach calls the number that pair

Progression(s)
attacker races defender to end line or back to the start line using 1v1 COD moves, depending on what the attacker chooses
Lengthen the area to make more physically challenging
Defender starts with the ball and passes to attacker before overlapping and racing

Counter Drill 3 (15 mins)
Setup
- Two mini goals. 26 yards apart depending on age. Players lined up with
ball each on one side line
Practice
- On coach's signal 1st Players in each team race around the back of the goal
with the ball
Get beyond shooting line and then shoot in the goal.
First to score wins a point for their team
Coach calls out scores with every goal
Progression(s)
- 1-Competition first Team to 10
- 2- Place the balls in a pile on the opposite side of field, just the first player with the ball, once player shoots, they must get ball either they shot with or one from the pile and pass back to teammates before they can go
3- now Dribbler passes across front of 1st goal to self going round goal before playing 1-2 with WP.

• Touch Direction & Touch Speed for initial speed

Game Related (30 mins)
Setup
- 30x35yard area. A defender/shooting zone at each end.
- Coach at side with balls
- teams on opposite sides of the area.
Practice
- Coach signals, 2 players from each team have to run around the goals at their own side, both players must go round a different goal. Quickest team receives possession. One defender must defend inside shooting zone. other can press the ball. if attacking team shoot and don't score, teams switch roles and coach gives defending team the ball with a chance to score. shooting player must run back around his goal before he can defend again. SCORING IS A RUNNING TOTAL

- 2v2 defend straight away
- 3v3 run around goals.
- 3v3 defend straight away
- 1 touch finish or goal scored in 3 seconds is worth two points
- Play must go through the midfield zone
