6v3 - Three Zone Transition

Organization:

30x18 - Three areas of 10x18

Three teams of 6 players

Coach serves the balls to keep the exercise move quickly

Instructions:

Teams must complete three passes in their possession zone before attempting to play through, around or over the middle defensive zone. The three-pass rule is to allow time for the team transitioning into defends to get pressure on the ball.

The team in the opposite possession area must provide support for all three options - wide players have the ability to drop into parking zones positioned either side of the central zone

Teams score for every successful action forward

If the ball is lost the team must quickly transition to the middle to defend

Coaching Points:

Shape to have options forward, backwards and sideways - small triangles

Quick combinations to draw the defender to the ball

How to create gaps to play through - playing wide - backwards and then through

Quick decision-making

Technical application - driven, lofted or firm passes to wide player

Wide Player - ability to catch the ball and pass forward

Progressions:

Defenders in the middle zone can defend the players in the parking areas

Allow teams to decide how many players they send into press and how many they keep back to screen passes

9v9 - R/Lines

Organization:

84 x 54 with retention lines 23 yards from each goal - sizes can be adpated based on numbers or age group.

9v9 set up in a 1-3-3-3

Games are 7 or 8 mins long and should be high intensity - 2mins rest/discussion

Normal re-start rules apply - throw ins, corners, goal kicks etc.

Instructions:

When the goalkeeper has possession the attacking team must retreat outside the retention line.

The team building out must recieve the first pass under the retention line.

The defending group must press the first pass.

Coaching Points:

Forward Defending - getting connected before closing

Two forwards run at the ball to rush the player in possession - good angle and speed to force play into agreed areas

The team slides over to one side of the field giving up the weakside

The third forward has to takeawy both passes in front of the HM and be ready to close the GK

Fore checking - CM's and FB's must be ready to step in and intercept passes

Backline shifts over to allow one player to step higher - defenders must be comfortable defending 1v1 if the attacking team plays long.

Throw ins - team shifts over to cut the field in half and create numerical advantage on that side of the field - fore checking again should be coached to ensure players are aggressively looking to intercept the ball
