Set up: Area depending on intensity day & amount of players. 3 teams with a big goal & GK.

Format: Red start as possession team & attack goal. Blues are defending team with GK. • If a goal is scored by Reds or put the ball out of play, that ball is finished and the next one comes into play.• If Blues regain possession, they have to find one of the players on the outside Yellow for the ball to be finished. If they do not find the players on the outside, Reds keep that ball.• Yellows play for both teams.• Every time Reds score, they get a point. Blues block a shot, they get a point.

Progressions:  Outside players are limited to 2 touches.• One-touch finish = 2 goals.• One-touch finish from an outside player = 3 goals.• Def keep a clean sheet from the whole round of nine balls = 5 goals.

Key Points:  CREATING GOALSCORING OPPORTUNITIES • Develop 1v1 skills to slow def down, feint to unbalance defender and shift to open up space to finish.• Try to get players to experiment in different ways to create space for goalscoring opportunities.

If not in a 1v1, encourage players to find the spare man and move the ball with good ball speed to find teammates in better positions to score.

Make the pitch big: use the width and try to keep someone central as a number 9/finisher.• If the ball goes wide for crosses, encourage movement in the box: someone central, across the front post, back post and in a position deeper for a cutback.

Challenge the wider players to recognise what crosses to make depending on their teammates and opposition positioning. For example, when to cut back, play between goalkeeper and defenders or when to lift it to the back post.

COMPACT DEFENDING, 1v1 DEFENDING, BLOCKING AND DEVELOPING A MENTALITY TO NOT CONCEDE • Defending 1v1 techniques: side-on, force away from goal, watch the ball, move your feet with the attackers, use closest leg to the ball to block. Don’t turn your back!• Have the bravery to let the ball hit you to block shots.

Work together, remain compact and defend the goal.• Ensure the player pressuring the ball is supported by a covering player.

Communication as a group; nearest player to press and then how the other players support and deny space.•

Defending the box: one player front post, one central, one back post and one to deal with the cutback.• Defending balls from wide areas; hips open to see the ball and the player. Clear the ball with your closest foot to the ball.

Coach Challenges  Encourage the players to discuss how they can earn points and be effective when they’re defending.

Encourage the attacking team to develop their strategy of how they’re going to earn points during their set. Encourage them to discuss how they can benefit from using the bonus-point system.
