Functional (20 mins)

Organisation

Half 11-a-side pitch. Central area width of 18yd box by 30-40m starting 5m outside box.

- 18 Players

- Reds – RB, LB, CM (3), ST

- Blues – RB, LB, CM (3)

- Neutral Server (White) - serve at various points across the line

- Ball Starts with White. Pass into one of 3 Blue CM. Combine and play through and play into ST (turn and finish)

- If Reds win possession, play into server. (6 seconds) then recycle.

1. RB/LB for both teams aren’t involved firstly. Just play through CM and central area to ST.

2. RB/LB involved. Blue fullbacks can enter central area. Reds locked to their area.

Coaching Points

- CM – come away, create space and come back in to receive.

- Play into opposite midfielders. Why? – Able to receive easier on half turn opening up to see ¾ of the area. Opposite pass will generally drag the opposition apart and split.

- When full backs involved, can they come inside to create an overload.

- Why – to attack zone 14, split the opposition and to create opportunities on goal

- Where – in and around zone 14, wide areas to create chances to cross and finish

- How – decisive and penetrative passing, dynamic CM movement and ability of fullback to get involved, create width and combine with midfield players. ST runs and space creation.

- What if – lose possession, 1 CM to sit and play cover role, screen the server.

- Quality of first touch

- Choice and execution of pass

- Informative and effective communication

- Combinations

- Confidence to want the ball

- Tempo

- Split opposition

- Play through to ST if oppourtunity arises

- Incisive

- Decisive

- Creative and imaginative

- Try to occupy 3 out of the 5 corridors

- Differing lines

- Angles and distance of player support

Progression(s)

- Play into FB, open up and play with CM to create wide overload.

- Areas removed; free roam.

- All 3 CM touch before playing through to ST

- FB can be the play to deliver ball into ST (cross, switch)

- Add Red CB to play vs. ST

SSG (25 mins)

Organisation

Half 11-a-side pitch +15m depth for goal.

18 Players

Blue – GK, RB, CB, CB, LB, CM (3), ST

Red – GK, RB, CB, CB, LB, CM (3), ST

Ball Starts with Blue GK. Play out to CB or fullbacks, play into midfield. Combine to score.

If Red win possession, play to score. (10 seconds) then recycle

Coaching Points

Play into opposite CM to open up

Always create 3 passing options.

Pass and move

Combinations – be inventive, fluid movement, can CM (10) come feet to create gap for another CM to fill etc.

Fullbacks play high and wide, stretch the opposition units. Starting position.

CM – come away, create space and come back in to receive.

When full backs involved, can they come inside to create an overload.

Why – to attack zone 14, split the opposition and to create opportunities on goal

Where – in and around zone 14, wide areas to create chances to cross and finish

How – decisive and penetrative passing, dynamic CM movement and ability of fullback to get involved, create width and combine with midfield players. ST runs and space creation.

What if – lose possession, 1 CM to sit and play cover role, screen the ball into opposition ST, CB positive defending. If in wide areas, full back press and show outside. CB cut across and support, CB further comes round to balance and dictate, opposite full back tuck in and be narrow in line with support CB. Open body stance.

Quality of first touch

- Choice and execution of pass

- Informative and effective communication

- Combinations

- Confidence to want the ball

- Tempo

- Split opposition

- Play through to ST if oppourtunity arises

- Incisive

- Decisive

- Creative and imaginative

- Differing lines

- Angles and distance of player support

- End product

- Positive

Progression

Problem solve opposition full backs playing higher. Red fullback drop and narrow to defend, but possibility of counter attack in behind that space. Or can ST or CM fill that gap and exploit.
