Skill Practice (10 mins)

Set up:

40x30m pitch set up by using small cones.

Teams are separated at the start with one player with 2 bibs on.

Ball nets on either side of the field.

1 goalkeeper

Owen et al (2004)'s research into small sided games shows that isolating 1 v 1 and 2 v 2 scenarios lead to by far larger amounts of dribbling than any number of larger small sided games, such as 3 v 3, 4 v 4 and 5 v 5.

Objectives: The drill starts as a 1v1 with the blues attacking first once they are done attacking another red will join they're team and then attack as a 2v1 against the blue. After they're go 2 blue teammates will join and make it 3v2 against the reds.

A focus on the 'Welsh way' Exploiting and creating overloads style of play (FAW, 2023),

Progressions/regressions:

-Attacking team have 5 seconds to get a shot off on goal.

-Double points for the red team.

Conditions/challenges/targets:

- Can you score within 7 seconds?

- You must make 2 passes before scoring.

- Can the defenders score against the overload?

Philosophy and principles of play:

- Creating and exploiting the overload

- Transition (attack and defense)

SSG (10 mins)

Set up:

40x30 pitch is set up using small cones. 2 mini goals and 1 large goal on opposite ends.

Both teams separated into teams at start. (10 players)

Ball nest on either side of field.

1 blue gets two bibs and takes off for the ssg.

Owen et al (2004)'s research into small sided games shows that isolating 1 v 1 and 2 v 2 scenarios lead to by far larger amounts of dribbling than any number of larger small sided games, such as 3 v 3, 4 v 4 and 5 v 5.

Objectives:

4v3 in middle of pitch with 2 goalkeepers. Neutral player supporting any team with the ball.

To start with the blues start with the ball and try and progress forward to score. Each goal is worth one point.

The aim for the blues is to use the neutral to make they're overload harder to defend. If the blues score or the ball goes out of play off of a blue it becomes a red ball. And for red if they score or the ball goes out of play off of a red it becomes a blue ball.

Progressions and regressions:

Blues have to complete a certain amount of passes before being able to have a shot.

Neutral player can have a shot on goal

Challenges/conditions/target:

- Can you score with a first time finish

- you have to make 5 passes before scoring

- you have to use the neutral player before you can score

- Can you score within 10 seconds of getting ball. (both teams) = 2x points
