Getting compact/ behind the ball when ball is lost:
Space
-Midfield and Defensive 3rd
-Set up the cones in the positions they need to return to when the ball is lost
Exercise
Players pass the ball around within their positions. On your command the boys find you with a pass and then drop into their space. You will be the player in blue with two other players in wider spaces. You will then pass the ball between each player and make sure the group shifts together. When the ball is passed to a player make sure they hold it for about 5 seconds so that gives them time to get organized. Move the ball between the 3 players for about a minute and have the boys work on their shape (EVERYONE BEHIND THE BALL). After you've done the rotation for a few rounds work in the two players that are passing the ball.
Coaching points
•Sprinting into their positions (TOP SPEED, if one player goes slow do it until the whole group buys in)
•Communicating ( commands must be loud with confidence. encouraging)
•Understanding 1. press/cue (cues to go apply pressure) 2. Closing speed (How fast they close is based on the touch, nearest man needs to slow the player down) 3. Body positioning (How should my body be positioned? Clarify where you want them to force each of the players passing the ball).
• The spacing between players when shifting (Ensure that one attacker isn't beating two players because players aren't shifting quick enough)
• Pressure cover balance
Duration 15-20mins
Execute early in the session so that concentration is high. After agility would be ideal.
