Set position (15 mins)

Set Position (3 groups)

Aim:

The GK is unable to make a save unless he is ready to do so, getting into a suitable position is a requirement of every GK, from the new GK to the professional. Most GK mistakes will be made by the GK not being ready to save the shot. If the GK is halfway to making a step how is he able to make a dive???

Instructions:

Using a tight goal the GK will start facing towards the 'net'. On command, he will turn around and 'set' for the shot. Once the GK has the ball he distributes it out to the side (2) who then passes it back to (3)

Service: c- catch & clipped ball x 3 each

Coaching points:

* GK is facing the ball with feet, hips and shoulders

* GK is watching the ball all the way into his hands

* GK is balanced forward

* GK is able to see his hands

* If the ball is off to the side the GK is moving to get his body behind the ball

Aim

A way of securing the ball which comes into the goal box from an attacking team or a header or unintentional pass-back from a defender. The ball is collected by the GK who can then distribute the ball quickly or take his time to allow his team mates to get organised. We will go over the different types of scoop save and what the pros & cons are of each type.

1. Dive to floor

Instructions:

Using a tight goal, the GK will start facing in towards the 'net'. On command, he will turn, get in-line and set for the shot. (The c can move either side to encourage the GK to move in-line but this is not the main purpose of this drill). As the ball is moving the gk will move forward and 'scoop' the ball up with his hands and push forward with his feet so he is 'diving forward'. The gk will finish lying on hi stomach with the ball secured under his chest. x 3

2. 1 knee pick up

Instructions:

Using the same set up as (1). After the gk get in-line with the ball he will lower onto 1 knee and then scoop the ball up with his hands. Once he has the ball secured the GK will stand & return the ball via the GK's. x 3

3. Standing scoop

Instructions:

Same set up as (1) & (2). Once the GK gets in line with the ball he will simply bend down and scoop the ball up. x 3

3. Running scoop

Instructions:

Same set up as (1). Once the GK turns the C will serve the ball and the GK will then run 'down the line' of the ball to scoop it up on the way without slowing down. Used if an attacking player is closing down on the ball. x 3

Coaching points:

* The gk is getting down the line of the ball and receiving the ball square on

* The ball is held and not spilled

* The ball is distributed once the GK is on both feet
