Ball mastery

12-15min

In squares player will perform various individual technical skills.

General coaching points.

-Encourage that players start all moves slow and progress to doing them faster as they master the skill.

-All skills should be done/perform with both feet.

-Players should make every effort to keep their ball inside their square throughout the skills.

Group A:

Shuffle - bend knees, keep ball in front, use side of big toe to tap the ball back n forth

Side roll & controlling ball with inside of the foot - talk about the roll going accross body and shifting body along with the ball. Utilizing opposite foot to control it, toes up and heel down, making sure foot controlling the ball is not on the ground but above ground.

Pull turn - Ensuring location of the ball in front of player prior to performing the pull.

As ball is being pulled body is turning same time.

Slide - Foot starts slightly to the side of the ball in the direction the skill is being performed.

Encourage the ball to slide far out to the side and as foot is coming over the ball to bring it inside to use the side of big toe to bring back in.

Staitionary side step faint - same coaching points from next slide on unopposed moves.

Group B:

Vpull same foot-

talk about opening up hips to go in opposite as ball is being pulled in.

pushing the ball forward and diagonal utilizing inside of the foot toes up heel down.

Slide - Foot starts slightly to the side of the ball in the direction the skill is being performed.

Encourage the ball to slide far out to the side and as foot is coming over the ball to bring it inside to use the side of big toe to bring back in.

Moves unoppose (15 mins)

12- 15 min

Practice Organization: Set up 4 to five lines depending on #'s facing each other about 15 YDS apart. In the middle of each line set up an imaginary defender with cones and a pole or just cones. Players at both ends of lines will have a ball.

Session Details: On coaches command players on both ends of the lines will dribble at the same time and perform a specified move/faint and continue their dribble to the opposite line.

Group 1 will work on side step faint & side roll push

Group 2 will work on scissors & cookie

Group 3 will work on scissors & Matthews

Coaching Points for ALL moves general:

- Prior to performing move ball location in between body slightly in front.

- Taking a peak having head up to see where defender is at.

- Exploding after the move

-Ensure players are performing the moves slow at first until mastery is happenning then they can go faster.

Side step faint key points:

Using a small quick step

At the same time of small step ensure to use a shoulder drop & waist movement

Ensure to teach proper technique of pushing ball forward and diagonal with outside of the foot

Roll Push key points:

Ensure the roll is performed across the body to keep as far away from defender as possible, with inside of the foot upon completing roll teach to push the ball forward with inside of the foot.

Scissor key points:

Perform scissor fast and low around the ball

Shoulder & waist fake to help make the move better (don't concentrate on this too much until scissor is being done properly)

Ensure to teach proper technique of pushing ball forward and diagonal with outside of the foot after scissor

Matthews:

Teaching players that as soon as they slightly touch ball to the inside to initiate fake immediately a small skip/hop with opposite foot is done same direction the ball was touch in and then wrap their foot around the opposite side of the ball with oustside of the foot slightly touch it forward and digaonal.

The smaller the skip is and the faster the players can go from inside to ouside (after the skip) the more effective the move will be.

Cookie:

The ball should be dragged with inside of the foot across players' body, ensure body is being shifted as ball is being dragged, push ball forward with the inside of the opposite foot.

1v1 w/4gates (20 mins)

Session Details 12-15 min

Upon coach calling out a color, the color called will dribble and make an attempt to dribble under control past one of the 2 gates directly in front of the color that was called out, The color of the team directly opposite to the color called will defend. For example if red called out blue will defend, red attacks

Coaching points:

-Awareness

-Deceitful with moves

-Attack the space

-Ability to go both ways.

-Encourage players to utilize moves we just worked on.

1v1's competitions (15 mins)

Practice Organization: Set up a small field 15x8 with a small goal at each end. Set up two markers at mid-field with a team at each marker 2yds appart.

Session Details: 1v1's to goal team with the ball will start off by dribbling towards marker 1, players dribbles around marker and goes to goal and tries to score. Player from opposite team will run around marker 2 and tries to defend. If defender wins ball he can score as well. Games should not last more than 10-12 sec for lots of repetition. After 10 to 12 min switch team roles.

Coaching Points:

-Dribble at speed under control.

-Take peaks to see where defender is at, don't dribble the entire time with thead down.

-Make an attempt to use the moves that were just worked on.

-Selling the move and doing it based on the defender is given the player.

-Acceleration/change of pace at appropiate times.

-Prior to making a move must have ball close.

-Encourage players to go both ways not always to the same side, keep defenders guessing unpredictable.

Passing & Receving

Practice organization:

2-3 players on each cone. start to the right or to the left, all players follow their pass or dribble see above.

Passing & Receiving Inside of the foot (2nd & 3rd group only)

Passing coaching points

- players must be behind the ball prior to passing not to the side

- Toes up, heel down, make sure they are opening up their foot completely

- Encourage players to make eye contact prior to passing the ball, they must look at their ball upon hitting it

- Players need to follow through NO half way motion on the pass

- WHEN USING THEIR WEAK FOOT ENCOURAGE THEM TO OVERDUE/EXAGERATE EVERYTHING

Receiving coaching points-

- Players to be on their toes and behind the ball

- Cush the ball in an give it a little push

- As ball is coming into players' feet open hips to go opposite direction

- Upon pushing ball out of feet look up.
