Tornadoes and Volcanoes (25 mins)

Split your field in half and play this game on half of the field.

Seperate your players into two teams, the Tornadoes and the Volcanoes.

Playing one minute rounds the players have to flip the cones over to represent their team names, Volcanoes so the cones look like volcanoes and tornadoes so they look like tornadoes.

After a minute the players will stop and the coach will count the cones and award a point to the team with the most cones representing their team. Play a few rounds this way and then play a few rounds with balls. When you play with balls the players have to stop their soccer ball next to the cone before they turn it over.

Makes sure you have a few more cones than players. At the end of the game the final round can be who can collect the most tornadoes and volcanoes and your area is tidy to set up your next activity.

Knockout becomes Have A Ball (25 mins)

Set up small 10 x 10 square for the following activity, the space should be small.

Knockout: Players dribble their ball while trying to knock other player’s balls

outside of the grid. Players can never leave their own ball. If their ball gets

knocked out have them retrieve it quickly and get back into the game. Coach

can give a minor challenge 10 ball taps, sprint around the grid, etc.

before player can re-enter the grid.

Focus:

Dribbling,

Shielding

Poke tackling

Have a Ball: Same set-up, but now one player in each grid begins without

a ball. The player without the ball now tries to win the ball off of any of the

dribblers. If he/she does so successfully, they now keep the ball and the person

who lost the ball tries to win any of the other balls back. You must win the ball,

you cannot kick it out. If the ball is kicked out the players who was dribbling

retrieves it and rejoins the game. Game should be played for 90 seconds. Who

doesn’t have a ball at the end? Assess a minor challenge for whoever is without

the ball.

Focus:

Dribbling,

Shielding,

Winning the Ball,

Transition

1v1 to two goals (Same Goals) (20 mins)

Move your goals so that you have two goals on one side as shown.

Split your players into two teams if you have pinnies use them as it helps with clarity. Have the teams stand either side of the coach with all the soccer balls with the coach in the middle.

The coach should play a ball out to one of the two teams. The first player in each line runs out and tries to gain possession and score in either goal. If a goal is scored or the ball goes out of bounds the coach shouts “Get Out of Here and plays in a new ball straight away for the next players.

Can the players move as soon as the coach plays the ball in?

If one goal is blocked by the defender can we change direction and try to score in the other goal.

Can the defender make a banana run (red line) to get inbetween the attacker and the goal rather than running straight at the attacker.

Scrimmage (25 mins)

Split your players in two and have a home team staying on your field, and an away team playing on your neighbour’s field. Start two games of 3v3 or 4v4 on each field. Have the coaches and the subs in the middle of the two fields. When the ball goes out of bounds have a kick in or a pass from the side line,
