Key Principle: Effective Possession 1. Structured Build up
Football Problem (using the 5W’s):
What: Goalkeeper (GK) and back 3 unable to play out ball from the back when GK has possession.
Who: GK, #2, #3, #5 & support play from #6,#8,#7,#11
When: GK has possession
Where: In my teams defensive 3rd
Why: No width from #2 & #5 & #3 poor positioning when GK has ball. #6 & #8 not combining with #3, #4, #7, #11
Session Objective: I aim to improve….. My Teams ability to play out from the back in when our GK has the ball. Our aim is to keep possession and build up play through better positioning of our #2,#3 &,#5 who will combine with our #6 & #8.
Team Task: To maximise the total width of the pitch in structured build up from the back, make field as big as possible when GK has ball, creating space for our backs to combine with our #6 & #8.
Player Tasks: (General / Position-specific):
* Wide players #2, #5, #7, #11 to push on high and wide
* #3 to move across the box to move the attackers.
* GK to play spare player (player not marked & not under immediate pressure)
* #6 & #8 to create they work space, check off away from defensive.
* #2, #3, #5 to recognize that if they are getting pressed to one side, a quick switch to opposite side will create overloads or 1v1’s switched side.
* GK to offer support option if there is a defensive block, if GK receives ball, look to switch play asap.
* #9 to create space for the wide players by running off the ball, checking in and checking out, be in position to create 1v1s or 2v1s.

- 4 v 3 (+GK)
Explanation:
-4 v 3 ball starting from RED #3.
-BLUE can intercept and place the ball on the line.
-RED to hit #9 as quick as possible.
- Ball starts back with the RED #3.
Progression:
-Add in 2 small goal to represent #9 & #11.
RED can score 1 point by hitting targets.
-Limit touches with RED team.
-4v4 (GK become last man)
Coach’s Cues:
-Ensure correct shape is set when GK/#3 has the ball
-Eliminate or reduce long 50/50 balls with the aim to retain possession and play out from the back.
-Ensure players are receiving the ball in forward facing positions
-Maintain balance of shape on the pitch, if the right side receives the ball wide, then the left side should tuck in and vice versa.
-RED players look to create 2v1 inside the grid where possible.
