Main Activity (25 mins)

Organization:

  • Set up as shown above.
  • Even teams if possible. If not possible, give attacking team numbers up.

Instructions:

  • Team attacking towards small pugg nets (small red cones in this image) gets 1 point if they score in between pugg nets, 2 points if they score inside pugg nets.
  • 3 points if scoring off a cross.
  • Defending teams can get point by breaking over opponent's opposite line.

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • What - What number situation do we want to have out wide to then look to play a cross?
  • Answer: 1v1 or numbers up. Also if defender is being lazy with closing down.
  • Where - Where could the striker and opposite winger run to confuse defending team to open up space?
  • Answer: Winger could make run cutting inside (near post), while striker makes run cutting outside (far post).

Regressions/Progressions:

  • Progression: Reduce length of the field, reduce size of the goal.

Conditioned Game (25 mins)

Organization:

  • Set up as shown above.

Instructions:

  • Red attacking big goal. 1 point if a goal is scored. 3 points if a goal is scored off a cross from one of the wide areas.
  • Blue get 1 point for scoring in pugg nets. 2 points if they break over line on the dribble.
  • Rotate teams.

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Who - Who are we looking to get the ball to as a team to play these crosses in?
  • Answer: The wingers, as they will hopefully have more space or chance to take opponent on 1v1.
  • When - When would we try to play a cross from out wide into the box in this game?
  • Answer: When our winger has space or 1v1 opportunity. Also if our center mid and options to reset are not there.
  • Why - Why are we as a team trying to use finishing off crosses as a way of breaking down opponents who sit deep?
  • Answer: Playing balls across the face of the goal causes many problems even for teams who defend deep with numbers. And we also have players who have great qualities when it comes to these moments so we will use our strengths here.

Regressions/Progressions:

  • Progression: Reduce size of wide zones.
  • Progression: Cut one side of the field. Very wide on one wing, super short on the other. (Thinking about this one extensively).
