Passing and Receiving Progression 1

Key Factors

  • Quick Tempo Passing and Receiving

Organisation

  • 5X5yd box with one player starting inside
  • 4 cones 10 yards from each side of box - rest of players fill these cones
  • 2 balls - on perpendicular cones
  • Player 1 passes into box to Player 2
  • Player 2 controls ball inside box for Player 1 to move onto
  • Player 1 follows pass and plays out of box to opposite line, then stays inside box
  • Player 2 leaves box and joins the cone where the ball started from
  • Second ball is played in by player 3. Player 1 controls inside box for Player 3 to move onto
  • Player 3 follows pass and plays out of box to opposite line, then stays inside box
  • Player 1 leaves box and joins cone where Player 3 started
  • Practice repeats from new starting points, same pattern
  • if ball is not controlled within box, or pass/touch goes astray on outside - ALL players complete recovery run to gate opposite practice

Coaching Points: - Scan before receiving pass - do I know which cone the ball is coming from/going to?

                             - Weight of pass/touch inside box - rap the pass in, can we deal with it first time?

                             - Body shape when receiving - are we still able to turn if necessary? Am I allowing space for player to follow pass?

                             - High tempo - as soon as one ball leaves the box, next one is in play - quick reactions, am I aware of pattern?

                             - If we have to hit recovery run, are we doing it right, immediately? Take ownership of mistakes

Passing and Receiving Progression 2

Key Factors

  • Quick Tempo Passing and Receiving

Organisation

  • 5X5yd box with one player starting inside
  • 4 cones 10 yards from each side of box - rest of players fill these cones
  • 2 balls - on perpendicular cones
  • Player 1 passes into Player 2
  • Player 2 receives on half turn, and plays out of box to opposite line from start point
  • Player 1 follows pass to enter box
  • Player 3 plays into Player 1
  • Player 1 receives on half turn and plays out of box to opposite line
  • Player 3 follows pass to enter box
  • Practice repeats following same pattern from new start points
  • If touch or passes go astray, ALL players complete recovery run through gate opposite practice

Coaching Points: - Scan before receiving - do I know which cone ball is coming from/going to?

                            - Body shape to receive - half turn but protecting ball

                            - Weight of pass - strong enough to allow the turn, make us deal with it

                            - High tempo - as soon as one ball leaves the box, next one is in play - quick reactions, am I aware of pattern?

                            - If we have to hit recovery run, are we doing it right, immediately? Take ownership of mistakes

Progression 3: Players who receive in box can play to any cone (follow pass) - scan between receiving and playing so we know where we're playing from

Receiving Tight to Carry Ball

Key Factors

  • Receiving in Tight Area to Carry Forwards

Organisation

  • 3 zone game - middle zone divided in half
  • Object of game is to move ball from zone 1 to zone 3
  • Ball starts in zone 1, Attackers must play at least 4 passes before trying to move ball to zone 3
  • Ball must be dribbled into zone 2, and then passed into zone
  • If defending team win ball back - they become attackers

Progression: - One player from zone 3 can now drop into zone 2 to receive ball with no pressure and dribble into zone 3

Coaching Points: - Does body shape allow us to receive and move forwards after final pass?

                            - Can we create space away from defender to allow us to carry the ball?

                            - When is correct time to drop into zone 2 (from zone 3)

                            - Final pass may have to be backwards, to allow space for us to drive forwards.

Receiving in Tight Areas Game

Key Factors

  • Receiving in Tight Areas Game

Organisation

  • 8v8 on mini pitch
  • Two boxes set up outside each penalty area
  • One box for attacking team, one for defending team
  • Players can move into attacking boxes to receive unopposed - have to play inside two touches
  • Goal scored from a set (pattern in Practice 1) is worth double
  • Goal scored after receiving in box, turning with first touch shooting with second is worth double
  • When building from back, players can drop into defensive box to receive and help them to play forward

Coaching Points: - When is right time to drop into those zones?

                            - Tempo of pass into zone - can we playing and out quickly?

                            - Support runs around zone - do we recognise when someone has played in? How can we offer options?

                            - We don't always have to go forwards - can we use the set to allow us to open gaps and progress ball different ways?
