holding up the ball

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
reasonable sized square depending on number of players you have
players will practice dribbling the ball with the bottom of there foot, rolling it left and right forwards and backwards with one foot at a time
players will dribble around the square when i shout weak foot! players will dribble with just there weak foot touching the ball, ideally the bottom of there foot, if i shout strong foot vise versa
im trying to get them used to controlling the ball with the sole of their feet

hold up introduction
everyone has a ball each in a 2 x 2m square
to begin with all the players must dribble in there square keeping hold of the ball by not leaving the square
on my whistle both sides 1 and 2 will take it in turns to go get the ball of the player in the opposite sqare
for example side 1 will go first, i will blow my whistle and all the players from side 1 will leave there balls in the square and go and take the ball of the player in the square opposite them, or kick it out the square, side 2 must hold the ball up inside the square without losing it
count down from 10 once the whistle is blown to see wjo can last the full ten seconds
each sides take it in turns attacking and defending
to make it more interesting you can change the matchups so everyone gets a chance to take each other on in a battle of strength to keep the ball
key points
1) put your body in the way of the ball so the attacker cannot get to it
2) keep the ball moving in the tight space depending on where the defender is attacking you from
3) use the sole of your foot, balance on one leg to control the ball at the same time as covering it (example)

introduce the iron fist (key word)
after 10 minutes of this drill introduce the iron fist technique, explain and demonstate what it is
explain that when holding up the ball you need to be side on to the player coming in to take the ball and to put your arm up to hold the player off, slightly bend your elbow and reach out to the player coming in, explain that you have to tense your arm and imagine you have an iron fist, by calling it this you can refer to it in later games and training session
now youve explained this to them let the drill run for another ten minutes getting them to try the iron fist and look to see if there is improvement

king of the ring ( two defenders)
the players in the square will dribble around as usual, when i shout king of the ring! the two defenders on the outside will come in to tackle the ball
do not give them any informaton on how to keep the ball yet

king of the ring
after the first 5-10m let them know that to keep the ball you have to put your body in the way of the ball and the player, this way the player cannot win the ball as long as you dont let him in front of you, if the defender tries to go round you this is where you would dribble with the bottom of one foot in order to keep the defender away from the ball
in a real game scenario you wouldnt be able to do this for very long as more players would eventually surround you but for now see how long the attackers can keep the ball for

players must dribble a ball towards the cone then backwards towards the line on one leg
so the players need to get used to bouncing on one leg coming towards the cone, rolling the ball forward using the bottom of the foot on there other leg, they must then go backwards rolling the ball backwards with them, once they have hit the line they must sprint out towards the end and the next player goes
this helps the players control the ball while balancing on one leg
