Shielding Practice (15 mins)

Key Factors

  • Shielding the ball
  • Getting body between the defender and the ball
  • Bending knees with feet hip width apart for balance & stability. Difficult to push off the ball
  • Using your buttocks and arms to hold defender off
  • Keeping distance between the ball and the defender. Keep ball on the 'safe side'

Organisation

  • Players have a partner from the opposing team with one ball between them.
  • Players need to shield and protect their ball for a time limit i.e. 20 seconds. Or steal the ball, then shield and protect.
  • Ball must be kept in the middle third. If you lose control out of the area then possession is turned over.
  • Whichever team has most players in possession of the ball at the end of the 20 seconds will score a point.
  • Change partners every one or two rounds

Shield, go, and shield (15 mins)

Key Factors

  • Shielding the ball whilst dribbling to a target.
  • Getting body between the defender and the ball
  • Bending knees with feet hip width apart for balance & stability. Difficult to push off the ball
  • Using your buttocks and arms to hold defender off
  • Keeping distance between the ball and the defender. Keep ball on the 'safe side'
  • Decision making on when to dribble and when to shield the ball. Can players dribble whilst still protecting the ball?

Organisation

  • Players have a partner from the opposing team with one ball between them.
  • Blue players are trying to steal the ball, dribble to the blue coned area and shield the ball until the timer has ended. Red players are trying to do the same in the red coned area.
  • There should be a timer i.e. 30 seconds. The team with the most players inside their coloured area and in possession of the football, will score a point for their team.

1v1 Shielding & Go (15 mins)

Key Factors

  • 1v1 directional game. Shielding but ensuring player then drives away from the defender, to the target.

Organisation

  • 2 teams lined beside the goals, off the pitch.
  • Each player has a number (1-4). When the coach calls the number, the player enters the pitch for the 1v1.
  • Red coloured cone is placed in one goal and a blue cone in the other goal.
  • After calling a number, the coach calls a colour (red or blue), and the players are trying to score into that goal.
  • Coach should delay the shout of colour to encourage players to get to the ball first, then shield the ball until the colour is called, then find the opportunity to dribble & score.
  • Once success is evident, Coach should shout multiple numbers to make more game realistic situations.
