Description

Objective - Build good fundamental techniques when making mid-height extension saves

Intentions - 

  • Build bravery/familiarity when going to ground
  • Understand the importance of proper body shape - shoulders square, don't rotate upper body
  • Understand principles of the power step - turn foot, toe pointed out, push from power leg (don't collapse knee)

Game - The Pit (15 mins)

Objective - Warm up and practice shot-stopping in a fun and competitive environment

  • 1) Keepers are all in "the pit" (a grid), doing ball familiarity warm-ups
  • 2) Each keeper has a number, when their number is call they move into the goal to face 2 shots from coach
  • 3) If they save both, they move to winners box, if not they return to the pit
  • 4) Last keeper in pit is eliminated (they still participate in the drill, but cannot be the winner)
Coaching Points
  • Reinforce good footwork and handling habits
  • Positional concepts - position on a line from ball to centre of goal
  • Set position - weight forward, hands out front of body, ready to spring into action

Activity - Foundations for Mid Extension (15 mins)

Objective - Introduce basic extension save techniques and build ground familiarity/confidence

  • 1) From hips
  • 2) From knees
  • 3) Power step from 1 knee
  • 4) Standing (you probably won't/shouldn't get here, that's fine)
Coaching Points

  • Head and hands to the ball 
  • Bring ball to the ground first (mid height extension)
  • Both hands to ball, ground as third hand, top hand secures while bottom hand extends thru (low dives)
  • Land on side, not stomach or back. Keeping top hand on ball should prevent landing on back, avoiding rotating hips/chest should prevent landing on stomach

Activity - Mid Extension Basics w/Handling, ABC's (15 mins)

Objective - Build mid-extension technique while working ABC's (lateral movement + vertical power)

  • 1) Quick lateral footwork through the cones
  • 2) Forward over the hurdle
  • 3) Quick lateral shuffle to touch cone
  • 4) Mid-extension serve to opposite side as cone touched
Coaching Points

  • Generate push from quads/knees/ankles - DON'T collapse the knee
  • Head and hands to the ball 
  • Bring ball to the ground first
  • Land on side, not stomach or back. Keeping top hand on ball should prevent landing on back, avoiding rotating hips/chest should prevent landing on stomach

Game - Handball (15 mins)

Objective - Practice shot-stopping in a fun, competitive environment

  • Two teams, preferably equal numbers
  • GKs look to score in opposing team goal by throwing the ball
  • GKs may throw ball to each other, but cannot run with the ball
  • Vary size/number/location of goals to suit session focus 
  • example of above - two goals either side of keeper if working extension
 Coaching points
  • Stay square to the ball, always prepared to stop shot/support teammate
  • Good set position - mobile, light, calm, ready to spring into action
  • Good fundamental handling habits on all actions
  • Good positioning and patience to give best chance of making save
