DIRECTIONAL POSSESSION – BREAK LINE ONLY VIA RWB (20 mins)

Time: 20 mins
Area: 40 x 25 (inside main 50x30)
Players: 6v6 + 1 neutral (rotate defenders every 2 mins)
RPE: 6 → 8
Intensity: 75/85%

Organisation

  • Two teams (6v6) play possession in their half initially
  • Directional goal: break the opponent’s defensive line to score a point
  • Rule: The only way to break lines is via RWB (receiving under pressure)
  • Neutral player supports possession and can float into any space

Constraints

  • Max 2 touches when receiving under pressure
  • Must receive on back foot and turn if possible
  • If line is broken legally via RWB → can advance toward mini goal or target area
  • Passing around without RWB does not count as breaking the line

Coaching Points

Technical

  • First touch oriented to create space
  • Receive under pressure (body position + back foot reception)
  • Accurate short/long passes under dynamic conditions

Tactical

  • Maintain team shape in possession
  • Support angles to help player receive RWB
  • Timing and positioning to exploit RWB opportunities

Physical

  • Quick acceleration/deceleration during RWB
  • Move into space after receiving
  • Keep intensity up while scanning

Psychological

  • Awareness of pressure and space
  • Confidence in executing RWB
  • Quick decision making: pass, turn, or release

Social

  • Communication (“time”, “man on”)
  • Support teammates and call for ball
  • Coordinated movement to create RWB opportunities

Challenges / KPIs

  • How many successful line breaks via RWB per team?
  • How quickly can the team recycle the ball if no line break occurs?
  • Accuracy of pass after RWB reception
  • Quality of first touch in pressure situations
Progression Options
  • Reduce touches to 1 on back foot for RWB
  • Add a second neutral player to increase RWB options
  • Limit space to increase pressure and force quicker decisions
