Arrival - 4v4 Keep Ball/Compactness (15 mins)

Instructions:

  • Ball is played into blue and 2 red jump to press. 5 passes is 1 pt. Red wins in can play across for 1 pt.
  • Round 2 - 5 passes is 1pt and also after 5 passes possession team can score on goals.
  • Def team needs to react to number of passes and form a protective shape to shift and cover the goals.
  • 8x2 minute rounds. 4 and 4 of passes/and protect.

Coaching Points:

  • Ability to recognize the moment to protect and drop to deny progression or goal.
  • Shift left to right and leave the furthest man.
  • Talk & communicate with each other.
  • Recognize moments to take space back - step in/intercept etc.

Progressions

  • Area opens up to full 4v4 
  • Points achieved by scoring into small goals to introduce compact mindset

8v4 - Protect (20 mins)

Instructions:

  • Ball is played into 8v4 - possession team with 8 and def team with 4. 
  • 5 passes and the ball can be crossed line to score in small goals
  • Def team can win by not allowing a goal scored for 15 seconds
  • 2nd round reflects previous activity, with after 5 passes / team must protect the 4 goals. 
  • Drill completed in waves

Coaching Points:

  • Ability to recognize the moment to protect and drop to deny progression or goal.
  • Shift left to right and leave the furthest man.
  • Talk & communicate with each other.
  • Recognize moments to take space back - step in/intercept etc.
  • Cover spaces between and minimize opponents ability to break lines.
  • Wide body stance to create visual wall to put off the opposition

Progressions/Regressions:

  • 8x2 minute rounds. 4 and 4 of passes/and protect.
  • Round 1-4 - 5 Passes -1pt and switch.
  • Round 4-8 - 5 Passes/Go To Goal/Protect.

8v8 - Situational (40 mins)

Instructions:

  • Situational 7v7 - one team sitting in defending 4-3 and the other team attacking in 2-4-1 shape.
  • 4x6 minute games - cumulative score over the two games.
  • Ball will start with attacking team for rounds 1&2 and also defending team being 1-0 up. 
  • Games 3-4 start as score finishes 1-2.

Coaching Points:

  • Manage the situation/understand the situation you are in protecting a lead.
  • Communicate and shift as a unit.
  • Wait for moments to take space back - ball backwards etc. 
  • Distances between players and compactness between lines.
  • Counter attack opportunities.
  • Ball in front, depths to take away threat behind, patience, game states
