Counter Attacking - Running with the Ball, Pressure & Cover

Steal & Counter (20 minutes)
Setup
40 yard square box. Two cones on each corner slightly staggard with one 3yards off the corner. 2 players at each corner with exception of A that has 3, one ball (keep a spare ball near each cone in the event of wayward balls)
Instructions
Defender Breaking on Ball and running at pace with the ball into space
Player A1 takes a big first touch towards Player B1 & runs with the ball at pace. Once they get 1/2 of the way to player B1, they play a leading pass for player B1 slightly out in front of their feet. Player B2 is on their toes in a ready position and breaks on ball to intercept and runs on towards player C1 and the cycle repeates around the square. Player B1 moves to B2, B2 to C1 etc.....
Coaching Points
1- Defending players are on their toes watching and anticipating.
2- It is important that players intercept the ball with a guided leading first touch into space to run at pace.
3- Proper foot technique with laces pushing the ball out away from feet while running
4 - Strong break on the ball to be first to it
5- Bigger touches when in space
Progression
Add a wall player for the defender to play a one touch pass and go after the steal for combination play.

Pressure & Cover (20 minutes)
Setup
20 yards by 30 yards. Big goal on one end, 2 small pugs on other. 4 pinnies of a different colour than rest of team for attackers.
Reds attack - Blues defend in this example.
Instructions
The goalkeeper and attackers try to play out from the net and score in one of the two mini goals. Defenders are to win ball and try to score on big net
Coaching Points
Defenders close down with speed.

Player A takes a big first touch towards Player B runs with the ball at pace. once they get 3/4 of the way to player B, they play a leading pass for player B to run onto and the cycle repeates around the square.
Coaching Points
1- All players must go to meet the ball when receiving a pass.
2- It is important that players receive the ball with a guided leading first touch into space to run at pace.
3- Proper foot technique with laces pushing the ball out away from feet
4 - Head up
5- Bigger touches when in space
6- Accurate leading pass to teammate with pace.
