Technical Breaking lines requires specific technical qualities from players to execute precise actions under pressure such as their quality of pass, (firm accurate low driven pass) and Scanning & Decision Making players should be Constantly looking for passing lanes before receiving the ballIdentifying pressing triggers to exploit gaps in defensive lines. |
|
Tactical Positioning & Movement- Third-man runs: Creating an option beyond the first passing line. Rotations: Midfielders and forwards inter-changing positions to disrupt defensive organisation. |
|
Physical Acceleration & Sprint Speed – Players need explosive bursts to drive past opposition lines when carrying the ball or making off-the-ball movements. Reaction Speed – Quick responses to transitions to exploit space when breaking lines. |
|
Psychological Confidence & Courage- Players need confidence to receive the ball in tight spaces and play progressive passes.Fear of losing possession can make players hesitant, leading to safer but less effective sideways or backward passes. |
|
Social players need to communicate to break lines successfully weather thats verbal cues or none verbal cues. |

session description: 6v6 game in the middle with 2 Target players for each team next to the posts.
Before they can score, the Attacking team must pass to one of the Target players - who plays on 2 touches - to then receive an attempt to score.
Rotate the Target players every 4 minutes.
Technical Coaching Points
Awareness and decision making- When in possession of the ball, they should look to the Target players immediately. Even though they may not play this pass, they can see the whole field allowing them to see their teammates and the opposition.
body shape- Players need to have an open body shape as much as possible to allow them to play forward.
combinations or long passes- Depending on the space available, the Attacking team must look to play direct or play combinations to be able to penetrate the opposition.
forward passes- As the ball is travelling to the Target player, players need to identify how and when to run to create a goal-scoring chance.
Attacking Principles of Play
create space-
Players need to create space by offering length, width and depth to the attack whilst attempting to stretch the opposition.
passing and support-
Players need to offer different supporting positions to be able to see the ball and play in between the opposition rather than in front, adding depth to the Attack.
movement and mobility-
Players should stay behind the line of pressure and use creative movement to find spaces where they can receive through defenders on the half-turn to play forward or combined.
creativity-
Players need to be creative with their passing, offering different disguise passes to the game.
penetration-
Players should be encouraged to break lines by seeking out the furthest pass forward in this case the Target Players. If this pass isn't available, they should look to work backwards with short combinations to play through or around.

Breaking the defensive line skill practice
4 players start on the outside 7v7 in the middle and 3 channels across the area.
When in possession, teams need to play 2 Target players to the other to score 1 goal. if they are successful, the team keeps the ball.
Players can move anywhere, but encourage the team in Attack to maintain a player in each channel to maintain height and distances. Also, manage the opposition - Defending team - to Defend realistically.
Rotate the players from the outside every few minutes.
Technical Coaching Points
awareness and decision making-Players need to be aware of the ball, teammates, space and opponents to make effective decisions. This means they need to check their shoulder constantly.
passing and receiving-Players need to concentrate on their first touch. This needs to be as 'tight' as possible, no more than 1 step away from their body to allow them to pass quickly.
finding the spare player-Players need to look use combinations and movement to create free space to ultimately free a spare man to receive. This could be through overloading areas or working on patterns such as Up-Back-Through.
body shape- Players need to have an open body shape all the time to be able to see where the ball is and where the Target players are, allowing them to see the whole field.
