Set Up: Pitch size depending on work load L/M/H (see guide), split into 3 zones with a 5 yrd middle zone, goals at each end.

Format: 3v3 directional play to score in opponents goal. Attackers are allowed to drop into middle zone to receive & play forward. Def are restricted to defensive zone. If more than 12 players can use players in middle zone to link up play.

Progressions: Def can enter the middle zone

Attacking player can enter attacking half to create 4v3 overload.

Attacking Coaching Points:

  • Entry ballsand timing into neutral zone with and without the ball is important. Arrive inthis area as the ball does too.
  • Bodyorientation of receiving player should open (facing play) that protects theball from defender but allows you to play forward with next movemet.
  • Timing of3rd man run into attacking half happens after the person in the neutral zonereceives the ball. If the angle to receive is available and the space is therethen time the run to receive as you reach the space. Passer should disguisepass but it should be weighted that it allows the 3rd runner to receive inher/his stride.
  •  If the 3rdplayer run isn’t an option straight away then be aware that playing intostriker and then into the space for supporting run is an option too. Same principlesof timing apply.

DefendingCoaching Points:

  • Avoid beingsplit with passes by communicating who will press, who will provide support andwho will cover spaces. Supporting defenders must be aware that should a teammate be beaten they must be close enough to make a tackle.
  • As play goesinto the neutral zone a defender must at least go along to the nearest point ofpressing to screen a forward pass through the middle of her/his team.
  • Try to readthe 3rd player run and cut that passing option off. Force away from middle offield.
  • Intransition look to go forward quickly if the opportunity to attack is availablehowever if this isn’t an option then retain possession
