Warm Up (10 mins)

Organization:

Groups of 3

1 ball per group with extras on the ends

Instructions:

Outside player tosses ball on a lob into the middle

Middle player will turn and volley to the other outside player

Repeat for 1 minute before switching roles

Coaching Points:

Open body shape when ball is approaching

Progressions:

P-Volley ball without bounce

R-Allow player to catch the ball before volley

Unopposed (10 mins)

Organization:

3 grids

3 players in each grid as shown

1 ball per group, extras on the end

Instructions:

Player A takes a touch to the side

B checks to the opposite side of the touch, C checks to the same side

A plays the ball in to B's front foot

B chips the ball into their hands, then volleys in to player C

C dribbles back to the end of the grid

Rotation: A>B>C

Coaching Points:

Movement of B- Open body shape

Weight and quality of first pass

Receive with front foot

Chip to opposite hand

Strike the volley with laces through middle of the ball

Progressions:

P- Chip>tap>volley

P-Chip>volley

Semi-opposed (20 mins)

Organization:

3 grids

3 players in each grid, as shown

1 ball per group with extras on the end

Instructions:

Player A takes a touch to the side, player C checks to the opposite side

A plays in to C, who chips and volleys on net

Player B applies passive pressure on A's pass.

Players switch grids after 4 minutes

Rotation: A>B>C

Coaching Points:

Movement of B- Open body shape

Weight and quality of first pass

Receive with front foot

Chip to opposite side

Strike the volley with laces through middle of the ball

Turn hips when striking

Looking at the ball when striking

Progressions:

P- Allow defender to make contact with the shooter (still passive)

Conditioned Game (15 mins)

4v4+GK

Instructions:

2v2 in each half

Defenders must stay behind behind attackers when ball is in the other half (eg. the white defender behind the blue attacker in the picture above

2 pts for a volley goal, 1 pt for all other goals

Play to 2 or 3 minutes before rotating teams

Coaching Points:

Timing of run to receive the ball (is there a passing lane to go forward?)

Decision to volley or tap the ball over the defender
