vs. press: FB, HM, AM (20 mins)

Build up from a goal kick

Objective is to always create a +1 numerical overload. If opponents press with two, then three support players are required.

Once ball is played, search to find the free player in the midfield.

  • 5 and 4: Start inside the 18-yard box just off of the six-yard box.
  • 6: Find a central position that is unmarked. Depending on positioning of defenders, make a diagonal run to receive.
  • 3 and 2: Start in an advanced position near top of Zone 1 until the first pass is made and then look to support by dropping or moving up.
  • 8 and 10: Look for pockets of space and be moving to draw defenders to create space elsewhere.
  • 7, 9, 11: Pin the Back 4 at centre. Give us depth.

As play travels to centreback:

  • Fullback drops lower to receive the ball. Receive with an open body.
  • Holding midfielder looks to create a triangle between CB and FB.
  • If FB can play into the holding midfielder, she should.
  • Holding midfielder can look to dribble and draw a defender or play forward into space
  • Can FB make a forward run to draw defenders and create space
  • How can AM look to support forward on an angle from HM, FB and WF

  • 5 and 4: Start inside the 18-yard box just off of the six-yard box.
  • 6: Find a central position that is unmarked. Make a diagonal run into the box to support CBs. When ball is played to you, open up and receive to play forward.
  • 3 and 2: Start in an advanced position near top of Zone 1 until the first pass is made and then look to support by dropping or moving up.
  • 8 and 10: As 6 drops to receive, look to find supporting angles quickly.
  • 7, 9 and 11: Pin the Back 4 back as far as possible.

  • 8 and 10: Look to find space between the lines. Look to create supporting options.
  • 7, 9, 11: Pin the Back 4 as far back as possible.

When to switch:

  • When wide forward's progress is blocked, fullback immediately offers support.
  • CB recognizes a switch is on, so start dropping quickly in order to create a diagonal option from fullback.
  • Other CB sees partners movement and drops and gets in a position to receive promptly.
  • When CB receives, examine options: dribble forward to draw defender, pass to FB or look to play a forward pass.

  • 8 and 10: As 6 drops to receive, look to find supporting angles quickly.
  • 7, 9 and 11: Pin the Back 4 back as far as possible.

When 6 is marked tightly and cannot turn:

  • CBs communicate that she cannot turn.
  • 6 can play back to CB. She immediately finds new space and looks to drag the defender with her.
  • 8 or 10: One AM rotate into the vacant space and the other AM rotate into the space left by the other AM.
  • When the AM receives, can she open up to play forward? If so, do it. If not, play a safe ball back to the CB (or FB or GK). Midfield rotates again.
  • Once the AM can get facing forward, the closest FB and WF will look to create triangles/supporting passing options.

vs. mid block, create Back 3 (20 mins)

Build up from a goal kick

Objective is to always create a +1 numerical overload. If opponents press in a mid block with two or three, then use the space to create a Back 3.

Once ball is played, search to find the free player in the midfield.

  • 5 and 4: Start inside the 18-yard box just off of the six-yard box.
  • 6: Drop in between centrebacks in order to create a Back 3.
  • 3 and 2: Start in an advanced position near top of Zone 1, then move up to switch with wide forwards.
  • 7 and 11: Come inside to replace 8 and 10.
  • 8 and 10: Drop behind the press to find space. Create a double pivot in behind their first line of defence.

Goal of "Back Three" build up: Use the space given by the medium press to create overloads in the midfield.

  • 7, 9 and 10 rotation: 10 leaves the half space to find space left by 6; 7 drops into the half space and the 9 shifts into a wide area.

Goal of midfield rotation: Create confusion by the rotation and look to find the 7 or 10 open. Look to exploit any gaps caused by the striker's movement
