Description

Session is used to build confidence in 1v1 scenarios, specifically defending 1v1 scenarios

Players should be encouraged to be brave and understand that mistakes will happen and it is ok. They should also be encouraged to work hard when they do not have the ball (defending or when they lose it) to win it back.

Questions- How do we approach an attacker we are defending? What should our body shape look like when we are pressing? Why is guiding so important as a defender?

Answers- Close the space Fast, Slow as we get closer, get Low by bending knees, and get your body weight going in the direction they want to go until you are ready to step and win the ball.  Your chest should face the way you want to guide them, lower body should be side on, knees bent ready to go. Guiding allows the defender to put the attacker in less dangerous area, and can buy time for the defender's teammates to come help and win the ball.

1v1 Guiding Dribble Gates (25 mins)

Play 1v1 to dribble gates

Play starts with defender passing to the attacker. Focus on the approach to the ball (fast, slow, sideways, low). The attacker then tries to score in either of the dribble gates. Gates should have different values, for example blue can be worth 3 and red can be worth 1. Defenders should work on guiding the attacker to the gate worth less, while focusing on their body shape and trying to win the ball. If the defender wins the ball, they dribble to the opposite gates. (These can have different values as well or both the same.) Alternate the values of the gates to focus on defending both sides.

1v1 Guide away from shot (20 mins)

Play 1v1 to pugs with a defensive shooting zone

Pay starts with the defender playing the ball to the attacker still focusing on proper approach to the ball. Attacker gets 3 points in they score from while in the shaded zone and 1 goal if they score from outside of it. Defenders should focus on guiding the attacker away from the danger area. If defender wins the ball, they become the attacker going the other way.

Field is divided down the middle to make two 1v1s. Players should Continue to work on body shape and can introduce cover in pressure cover using the middle line if players are ready. Main focus should still be body shape and guiding attacker away from goal.
