Football/Soccer Session (Academy Sessions): Wingplay
Description
SESSION OBJECTIVES:
- Attack using the wings
- Creativity and chance creation - fullbacks & wingers
- Crosses/cutbacks/dribbling
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- 1 (GK) - Ball playing, finding the 7/11/2/3 directly or using 4, 5, 6
- 2 & 3 - Inverting inside, combining with wingers, crosses/cutbacks, overlap/underlap, goalscoring
- 4 & 5 - Finding the 2,3,7 & 11 as fast as possible
- 6, 8 & 10 - Switch of play, direct ball for wingers, wing penetration, use width, run in to the box to score
- 7 & 11- 1v1 dribbling, crossing/cutbacks, combine with 2/3, beating your opponent, skills, goalscoring, assisting
- 9 - Box presence, finishing, combining with wingers, off the ball runs
- 1 (GK) - Quick starts, finding 9 & 10 faster
- 2 & 3 - Show the wingers one side while defending
- 4 & 5 - Clearances, long balls, man-marking
- 6, 8 & 10 - Release the ball faster, play direct
- 7, 9, & 11- Finish faster, go direct, less time on the ball

DRILL FOCUS:
- Crossing, cutbacks, 1v1, overlaps-underlaps
SET-UP / ORGANIZATION:
- 3 markers on both wings with position specifc players
- 1 mannequin each on both wings
DURATION:
- 20 minutes
FLOW OF DRILL:
- 3 passes to 11, who passes to 6, who plays a forwards pass for3 - who can overlap/underlap and go forward
- Use 1 skill to go past the mannequin (depends on the pass by 6)
- Use different types of crosses/cutbacks
- 9 & 10 start outside the 18 yard box & make runs when crosser is on the ball
- Change groups after 90 seconds, keep changing sides of service after every 2 reps
- 4 & 5 pass & move near the half-line
- GKs rotate after 4 reps
PROGRESSIONS / REGRESSIONS:
- Add 4 & 5 to defend the strikers

- 50 x 65y - half-pitch
DURATION:
- 25 minutes
FLOW OF DRILL:
- 7 v 6
- CT - 1-3-3
- MT - 1-4-1
- Ball starts with CT GK
- CT progress the ball to the wing & score
- CT HAS to attack from the wings
- MT - only 1 defender can enter the wide channel to defend
- MT - play long/finish attack within 5 seconds
- Keep various starting points - throw-ins etc
PROGRESSIONS / REGRESSIONS:
- 9 v 7
- CT - Add 2 & 3
- MT - Add 9
- CT Use 2 & 3 to create different types of chances from the wings
- MT no condition on defending, but finish attack within 10 seconds of winning the ball
- 9 v 9
- MT - Add 8 & 10
- Same conditons
- Use linesman
