Pressing as a midfield unit - Regain the ball to then play wide.
Objective: Midfield & 9 to press the ball as a unit to try and get the ball wide. Winger then plays the ball into the box to score.
Instructions:
Blues
- Blues will start with the ball from the GK to play out from the back
- Blues will keep the ball for as long as they can, being able to use all their players on their team, their main objective will be to get the ball to their highest player
- Centre halfs & Full backs are locked into their areas, while CM are locked into their midfield area. Opposite Green players are also locked into their positional areas.
Green
- 9 will press the ball from the front
- 10 & 8 will press the ball together, focussing on our triangle technique with the 6 offering a cover press man marking the spare player
- 7 will step inside their area to increase the press over the pitch
- 11 will be showing to one of the red gates, if the ball is won the 11 needs to show by beating their full back to recieve the ball to drive forward to put the ball into the box
- 4 will be used as a bounce player, when possession is won they can be a safe option to keep the ball and start again before the ball is played wide.
- This will happen on the opposite side just a difference in numbers as each role has the same responsibility.
- When the ball is played to the 7 or 11 players are lifted from their areas to have live game play.
Coaching Points:
Out Possession
- 9 Body position to show the ball to 1 player, try to cut out the pass back to the goal keeper or the other centre half, encourage the ball to be played into the CM area
- 10 or 8 engage the ball, when the 10 has engaged the ball the 9 will cut out the ball back to the centre half & the goal keeper
- 10 engaged the 8 & 9 create the triangle formation of the press
- 6 will man mark the spare player
- 7 will come into the area as the ball is on the left hand side, this works the same within the opposite side if the ball was to start down the right, the 11 would have the same role.
- Communication
- Quick decision making - Fast to press, work on trigger points of when the ball is played into the CM the press begins with high intensity.
- Awareness to see the bigger picture of the triangle pressing formation
In Possession
- Quick and effective when passing the ball, weight of pass to keep possession
- Good movements to offer support opportunities
- 11 or 7 good touch out their feet to attack down the line to produce an effective cross on to the penalty spot.
Progressions
- Larger areas to use the full half pitch
- Lift the areas to have live game play starting from the GK
- Points system:
Green score a goal = 1 Point
Blue gets the ball to target player = 1 Point

Midfield - Regain To Play Wide
Pressing as a midfield unit - Regain the ball to play wide.
Objective: Midfielders / Number 9 to win back possession to play wide.
Instructions:
- Blues keep the ball for as long as they can, 6 v 4 overload. the blues need to try and get their furthest man up the pitch on the ball while keeping possession.
- Greens need to win the ball back to regain possesion.
- Play the ball wide into 7 or 11 who will play the ball back into the GK who starts the play
- If the ball is being played down the wings out from the CB / GK the opposite wing attacker can come across as they would within a game to complete the unit of pressing.
- Midfield need to win the ball back as quickly as they can to then be played into the 11 or 7. If the 9 wins the ball on his own he can reward himself with a shot on goal.
Coaching Points
- Working as a unit to press the ball
- Technical body position when pressing the ball forcing players into compact areas, using the triangle technique there should be 3 points of the press. One to engage the ball while the others support left and right of the player who has engaged.
- Passes, ensure the players play the correct pass to get the ball wide quickly to score, weighted pass into players.
- Movement from the wide players to ensure they can collect the ball through the red cones. The winger needs to be quick to keep the full back guessing on where they are going to recieve the ball. Midfield need to get the correct pass with the wingers movement for this to be successful.
- Retain possesion, ensure the correct pass is on to keep possession when won back.
Progression
- 2 touch with the CB's
- The blue get 1 point if their target man recieved the ball
- The green get a point when the Winger recieves the ball.
