2 vs 2 Defending
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Progression to 2 v 2. -Pressure and Cover
Goalkeeper starts play to defenders in starting positions.
Receiving Defender 1 dribbles to cones and passes to coache , once the coach receives and serves, the players play 2 vs 2
Defender 1 engages the receiver ( correct defending technique) and applies pressure
Defender 2 provides cover and should position themselves in a position off the shoulder of defender 1 that allows them to,,
1. Cover the Defender 1's back if they get beaten ( Sweep up)
2. See the second attacker and be in a position to engage him if he receives the ball. (DO NOT MAN MARK!)
3. Drop behind defender 1 to cover the danger area behind him
Once play starts the nearest defender to the ball should always apply pressure and the other defender provide cover

1 Vs 1 Defending- Angle of Approach
Defender (RED) Dribbles to flat marker ( or large cone) and passes to coach on the side line (This simulates the defender carrying the ball from defence and passing to the winger)
Once the pass is made the red defender must run around either side of the flat marker to engage the blue attacker who is about to receive the ball from the coach.
Once received and 1 vs 1 begins.
Coach or Server passes swiftly to the attacker (BLUE) Fast pass forcing good control.
The Blue attacker engages with the oncoming red defender in a 1 vs 1 scenario. Trying to score in goal 1 or goal 2
Coaching Points:
Encourage the correct defending principles. Slow, low, side on, body shape, dont dive in , jockey https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76HXkqpvZmU
Get the defenders to realise if their angle of approach is influencing the direction of the attacker or not.
Tell them something that the attackers dont know is that goal 1 is only worth half a goal to encourage them to take an angle of approach that steers the attacker toward the sideline.
