Set up & organization
Use a half field with one big goal and a GK, and two small target goals. On the 18 yrd line, cone off the corners for the safe zone as shown.
Instructions
Teams are split into 8v5. The team with 8 has one keeper and 7 outfield players and sets up in a 3-1-3 . This is the team that will be coached the principles of the formation. The team with 5 sets up in a 2-2-1. The game always starts off with the GK. He can throw or pass to anyone of his team, but is encouraged to use his FB’s. The 5 player team cannot enter the “safe Zone” until the FB dribbles or passes out. Once this happens its free play until a goal is scored or the ball goes dead. No corners in this games, but throw in’s are allowed. It is important that all players in the session get to play in all positions so swap out teams frequently. The shorthanded teams goals are worth double.
Coaching points
This game is to teach the basic build up, and attacking principles of a 3-1-3 formation. Have the FB’s pull out wide at goal kicks and when the keeper has it in hand to give width. The CB can also show for the ball, as can the CM if need’s be. The GK is very important to start the game out from the back so coach him as well as the outfield players. All attacking principles in play in this game so coach in the flow and let mistakes happen.
Progressions
Once the FB’s are combatable with creating width on restarts remove the cones and let the game go with no restrictions.
