Variation 1: A Positive First Touch (5 mins)

Set Up:

30 x 30 Grid

Purple team in one corner

Blue team in opposite corner

Two pug nets in the remaining corners facing in

Lots of soccer balls with the coach

Objective:

To learn how to receive the ball and the use of the first touch

Instructions:

Variation 1

  • The Blue player passes the ball to the Purple player
  • The Purple Player must take a first touch either to his/her right or left depending on the defender's position
  • Once the pass has been made, the Blue player rushes out to defend the pug nets
  • If the Blue player intercepts the ball, they must then pass it back to the next blue player in order to maintain possession
Coaching Points:
  • Shoulder Check
  • Head up when first touch is made
  • A positive first touch away from the defender
  • Protect the ball upon reception

  • Open up the body when defender is behind you

Variation 1

  • The Blue player passes the ball to the Purple player
  • The Purple Player must take a first touch either to his/her right or left depending on the defender's position
  • Once the pass has been made, the Blue player rushes out to defend the pug nets
  • If the Blue player intercepts the ball, they must then pass it back to the next blue player in order to maintain possession

Objective:

Instructions:

Variation 2

  • The coach passes the ball to the Purple player
  • The Purple Player must shoulder check before taking their first touch to see where the defender is
  • Once they have taken in the information, the reception of the ball is either to his/her right or left depending on the defender's position
  • The Purple player must protect their ball putting their body between the ball and the defender
  • If the Blue player intercepts the ball, he/she must protect the ball and pass it back to the coach which presents getting the ball out of danger and maintaining possession

  • A positive first touch away from the defender
  • Protect the ball upon reception
