Breaking Lines to Score (Wide Finish)
Setup
A central possession box (grey area)
Two teams inside (Red vs Blue)
Wide players positioned outside on the sides
A goal at the top
How It Works
Teams keep possession inside the middle area
To score, you must:
???? Play a line-breaking pass out wide to a wide player
The wide player then:
???? Dribbles forward and attacks the goal or combines to finish
Key Idea
You can’t score from inside the box
You must break the line → go wide → attack goal
Coaching Points (Simple)
Play forward when you can (don’t just pass sideways)
Look for the moment to split defenders
Wide players:
Stay ready and high
Attack quickly when they receive
Timing of the pass = before defenders shift

3-5-2 Positional Play Drill (Central Connectivity & Line Breaking)
Setup
Area divided into three horizontal zones (build / midfield / attacking thirds) and two vertical channels (left/right).
Two teams (Red vs Blue) set up in a 3-5-2 structure.
One goal on each end.
Players positioned to mirror realistic 3-5-2 spacing:
Back 3 in build zone
Midfield 5 (including wingbacks wide)
2 forwards
Objective
Develop positional discipline, central overloads, and line-breaking play
Emphasize:
Playing through midfield lines
Maintaining width with wingbacks
Creating vertical connections (CB → CM → ST)
How It Works
Play begins from the back three
Team aim to:
Progress through thirds
Break lines via passes or carries
Finish in the opposite goal
Players are encouraged to stay in their zones initially, reinforcing structure
Key Rules / Conditions
Must connect through the midfield zone before scoring
Central players (CMs) limited to 1–2 touch to increase tempo
Goals only count if preceded by a line-breaking pass or run
Wingbacks must stay wide in channels to stretch the game
Coaching Points
Build Phase (Back 3)
Create angles and width
Recognize when to step in vs pass out
Identify central passing lanes early
Midfield (5)
Constant rotation and staggering
Always provide:
One player between lines
One supporting underneath
Body shape to play forward quickly
Wingbacks
Stay high and wide
Provide switch options
Attack space once ball enters final third
Forwards (2)
Play on different lines (one high, one checking)
Time movements to:
Receive between lines
Run beyond back line
Progressions
Free Movement Between Zones
Allow one midfielder to drop or a CB to step in → encourages fluidity
Directional Transition
If possession is lost, team must counter-press for 5 seconds
Touch Limits by Line
Back 3 = unlimited
Midfield = 2-touch
Final third = free
Regressions
Remove zone restrictions (free play)
Add neutral player in midfield for overload
Allow unlimited touches to slow tempo
Key Outcomes
Improved positional awareness in 3-5-2
Better line-breaking decision making
Stronger connections between units (3–5–2)
Enhanced understanding of width vs central overloads

Split Box Rondo (Play Through the Middle)
Setup
Three small grids side by side
Each grid has:
4 outside players (red)
2 defenders inside (blue)
A middle channel (shaded zone) connects the top and bottom of the grid
How It Works
The outside players keep possession against the 2 defenders
To score a point, the team must:
???? Play the ball from one side of the box to the other THROUGH the middle channel
Defenders try to win the ball or block the middle pass
Key Rule
You cannot skip the middle
The ball must go through the central player/zone to switch sides
