DESCRIPTION

My U15 AFC Wimbledon team is primarily using a 4-3-3 formation this season. I would like to present a position-specific practice suited for my team. In the create-the-attack phase, we are using plenty of central rotations (not only but want to focus on this element) – (4-8), (8-10), (4-10), etc. Always trying to search for a good pocket to receive and progress with the ball. Our main problem to develop is detachment from the opposition in the tight space to receive the ball. We are constantly working on creating the space in tight areas where we have equal numbers of the players in the isolated zone, so players have to work off the ball to win position and find a pocket to play.

Warm Up (20 mins)

WARM UP (technical) - (12 players)

Working on receiving and passing skills, which will be a big part of the whole session.

Players split into two groups. One inside the circle, one outside the circle.

Players inside the circle, a ball each. They need to find a free player on the outside of the circle to pass the ball and swap with the player which is on the outside.

Tasks - Part 1:

  • Pass & receive the ball with left and right foot. Free choice. (all parts of foot – inside, outside, laces, etc.) - 2 minutes.

  • Pass & receive the ball only with the left foot. (all parts of foot – inside, outside, laces, etc.) - 2 minutes.

  • Pass & receive the ball only with the right foot. (all parts of foot – inside, outside, laces, etc.) - 2 minutes.

Tasks – Part 2 (players don't swap; outside players bounce the ball only, and players inside work for 45 seconds on high intensity.)

  • Pass & receive the ball with left and right foot. Free choice. (all parts of foot – inside, outside, laces, etc.) - 2 minutes. (swap after 45 seconds)

  • Pass & receive the ball only with the left foot. (all parts of foot – inside, outside, laces, etc.) - 2 minutes. (swap after 45 seconds)

  • Pass & receive the ball only with the right foot. (all parts of foot – inside, outside, laces, etc.) - 2 minutes. (swap after 45 seconds)

Coaching points:

Part 1 – Focus on the quality of the pass and variation of receiving skills. Encourage players to use different techniques – inside, outside, laces, etc. Same with receiving skills – inside, outside, sole, etc.

Part 2 – Can we scan the ball before bounce (not one scan but two or three scans to collect information from the surroundings)? What's our body shape? Can I receive space to drive to the blue zone and find another free player?

1v1 (20 mins)

1v1 Receiving under the pressure. (pressure from the back). (12 players)

The group split into two teams.

Pink & Blue.

The blue team can start the practice after "low five" (clap) with the opposition (reaction) to go and receive the ball from the coach. After "low five", the defender is active and can regain possession.

Task:

Blue – to receive the ball under pressure and turn, or win the position (lost/detached from opposition) to receive the ball and progress and score to the mini goal)

Pink – regain possession and score the opposite mini goals.

Six blocks x 4 minutes each. (2x from the left – blue & pink), (2x from the right – blue & pink), and (2x from the central zone – blue & pink).

Coaching points:

  • Can I detach from my opposition? Double movement, accelerate & decelerate. Can I find a good pocket to receive?

  • If I can't detach, how can I turn with the pressure from the back? Can I faint? Can I scan before receiving?

  • Which variations of receiving skills can I use?

6v6 - Zones (30 mins)

6v6 - Zones (12 players)

Players split into zones.

Blue zones – 2v1

White zone – 3v3

White zone: Isolated 3v3 area. Players from blue zones can't progress and drop to the zones to create an overload. We are looking for isolated duels to encourage players to move off the ball and create the space using rotations and individual detachment skills.

Blue zone: If one of the central midfielders finds a pass to number 9, he can join in the blue zone and create a 2v2 in the final zone to create and finish.

If in the build-up phase – 2v1 – defenders against 1 striker trying to find a free man in the middle zone.

Starting points:

Option 1 – Coach 1 (pass in)

Option 2 – Coach 2 (pass in)

Option 3 – If you score, opposition restarts from the goal area.

  • Can I rotate with my teammate to create a space?

Possible progression:

Normal throw-in in the white zone to create an option to replicate detachment in the game when we have a throw-in. The most common set piece in the game. It will be challenging for the team in possession being underloaded. It can have an impact on movement off the ball. If we can't move, we will not receive the ball.

11v11 (30 mins)

11v11

Players split into zones.

Blue zones – 2v1

White zone – 3v3

Yellow zone – 2v2

White zone: Isolated 3v3 area. Players from blue zones can't progress and drop to the zones to create an overload. We are looking for isolated duels to encourage players to move off the ball and create the space using rotations and individual detachment skills.

Blue zone: Players in the create-the-attack phase can join the blue zones to score. Players out of possession can't drop to support.

Yellow zone: Isolated 2v2 area. Players can't join in. High expectation to either win 1v1 duels or use 2 players' core moves.

If in the build-up phase – 2v1 – defenders against 1 striker trying to find a free man in the middle zone.

Starting points:

Option 1 – Goal kick

Option 2 – Throw in.

NO CORNERS. Re-start from the opposite goal kick.

Coaching points (focus on white zone):

  • Can I detach from my opposition? Double movement, accelerate & decelerate. Can I find a good pocket to receive?
  • If I can't detach, how can I turn with the pressure from the back? Can I faint? Can I scan before receiving?
  • Which variations of receiving skills can I use?
  • Can I rotate with my teammate to create a space?
