Creating Overloads
This animation shows the way in which the forwards dictated to the Barcelona back 4. Mane (10), Origi (27), and Shaqiri (23) played narrow to force Barcelona's defenders to come towards the centre of the pitch. With these movements there are opportunities to overload the middle of the pitch to get Fabinho (3), Milner (7) or Henderson (14) in comfortable possession on the ball. Here Milner (7) drops into the full back position vacated by Robertson (26). Fabinho (3) moves to occupy both Rakitic (4) and Vidal (22). This then allows passes to be made to go forward, ending up with overloads in the final 1/3 of the pitch. In this example, Robertson (26) and Mane (10) combine to release Mane (10) into a crossing position to play a ball across the front of the 6yd box for Origi (27) or cut back for oncoming midfielders Shaqiri (23) or Henderson (14).
