Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition)
Pitch sized 25 x 18m, can be adapted to suit age and ability of players. Halfwayline included to help with
player spatial awareness and to use as a retreat line if needing to regress the drill.
3 xteams of 4 players. Bibs placed ready, with balls gathered at either end of playing area to maximise
rolling time.
4v4 inside playing area with 4 x players on outside to support whichever team is 'in possession'.
Target players (T) are at either end, Support players (S) are on either side.
(S) and (T) have freedom to move along their own individual side/end of the pitch.
Out of possession. Objectives for team 'in possession' are same as previous drill score points by completing a switch from Target player (T) to Target player (T). Objective for team 'out of possession' is to stop the switch of play whilst also defending the central box.. Whenever ball turns over, the team that loses the ball becomes 'out of possession' so transitions to defend the white box. Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
Progressions - Switch of play can only score a point by using at least one Support player (S). Limit players on outside to 2-3 touches, or 3 seconds, depending on ability. Defending team can only score in goal after making 3 successful passes after turning the ball over. Team 'in possession' can only score points by playing through the white box if it becomes too easy.
Regressions: Team 'out of possession' should aim to keep 3 x players behind halfway line when Target player (T) makes first pass infield. Team 'in possession' should aim to have at least one player in each half of the pitch at all times to open up space. Passes can be allowed between outside players to help open up the game.
Challenges: Team 'in possession' can score 2 points by completing a switch of play using a successful pass into the white box (in possession). Team 'out of possession' can score a point by winning the ball back and scoring in any of the goals - this encourages attacking transitions (out of possession). Scoring points by successful completion of a switch as per drill 1 (in possession).
Conditions: Passes between players on outside not allowed, this is to develop players' ability to play under pressure. Time limit (or touches) on outside players to promote realism.
Targets: White flat coned box to give defending team focus for protecting central areas. Mini-goal on each corner to give defending team additional opportunity to score points. Target player on either end of playing area. Switch of Play principles to be layered in - looking to support individual +1: Force wide Keep play predictable Pressure on ball Leave the furthest players Coaching Points - looking to support individual +1: Body shape in defence to show away from centre Triggers to press and second pres
