Passing in 2s (15 mins)

Passing in 2s

Option 1

In partners at a close distance (aprox 5 yeards), player A passes the ball straight from right foot to their left. Player B then passes the ball on an angle from left foot to player A's left foot. Then player A passes straight again from left foot to partners right foot and so on.

Option 2

A controls with left foot and brings the ball across their body to their right foot. Then A passes to B who does the same sequence. After some time, coach will say switch and the ball goes in the opposite direction.

Option 3

Player A passes to the middle for player B to control with outside of foot to the same side as the foot they use. Then player B does the same sending the ball back to player A centrally to use the outside of the foot to move the ball with their first touch.

Some progressions include

a ball each doing Option 2

a ball each doing option 1 with only the straight pass option

1 ball passing 1 touch back and forth, other ball in a players hands to either toss back and forth or to increase difficulty, toss for a header while continuing 1 touch passes.

Passing in numbers

Passes go in sequence from 1 to 2, 2 to 3 etc and then 5 back to 1

Players should be piece by piece adding the details

Details

Eye Contact

showing with hand where they want the ball

Calling their numbers before the number in front of them receive the ball

Check shoulder

Fix shape

Receive half turn

Play 1 touch with back foot

Play 2 touch with back foot first, take the touch across the body away from the defender

Coach can add in no communication to have the players work on getting their head up when they don't have the ball.

Coach can also shout switch to have the players go in the other direction or if there is an odd number in the group, have players go from 1 touch to 2 touch each pass.

3 out 1 in passing (15 mins)

3 out 1 in passing

A grid of 8 x 8 with 3 players outside the grid and 1 player inside.

Player 1 passes to the middle and gets the pass back in the open space.

While this is happening, player 2 passes to player 3

As the player receives the pass from the outside, they play a wall pass with the middle and works that wall pass around to the next side of the square.

Player in the middle has to constantly get their head on a swivvle and see the next pass coming.

Potential Progression

Only at higher levels but the coach can shout change and have the players change the direction of the passes to see if they can make the quick adjustments.

Coaching Points

Player on the middle must receive on the back foot

Details for passing (name, info, show with your hand where you want the pass, weight and direction of pass)

When the player is going to receive the pass from another on the outside, they should be checking away, checking to, chek shoulder, fix shape and receive on the half turn

Player 3 now passes to the middle and player 1 passes to player 2

They are all constantly moving around the grid and the player in the middle is always with his head on a swivvle being sure to up up to the new ball coming in to the grid.

Star Pattern play

A and 1 start with the ball. They pass to their CB partner B and 2.

B then plays into CM C and 2 plays into CM 3 who then bounce it back to their right side of the pitch to look wide.

B and 2 after receiving the returned ball pass out to D and 4 who move up the line with a dribble to then restart the pattern with a pass to the starting queue.

Players all follow their passes to experience each position in the pattern

Details

- Communication from the CB's

- Checking away to come see the ball from the CM's

- Checking away to create options from the wide player

Variations include

3 line game

Set up

Grid is 15x15 boxes on the sides, 5/10 x 15 in the middle (size dependant on age and skill of players and how many players in the boxes)

Team divided into 3 teams. 2 on the sides and one in the middle

Play

Coach plays ball to one of the teams on the sides

Team in the middle sends defenders into the side grid (1 at first, build to 2 if ability allows)

offensive team makes a set number of passes (U11 we do 4 or 5) and then the goal is to send the ball to the opposite side.

The pass to the opposite side can be through on the ground (remaining defensive players are permitted to intercept this pass) or over the middle group.

If they succeed then they score 1 point and stay where they are, defensive team then goes to challenge the ball on opposite side. If the defensive team wins the ball, they take the place of the attacking team and play continues as it started.

Details

Shape of the attacking team (fill the box and be at good supporting positions)

Communication on offense

proper body shape to receive the pass

if 2 defenders closing, look to split

don't have to pass to opposite side after requisite number of passes, ensure the right opportunity
