Wave practice, based on numbers either 3v3 or 4v4.
Organisation:
Set up the pitch with the full size goal being the main target for the attacking team and a small goal for the defending team to score in if they win the ball back.
Split the group into 2. The attacking team start with the ball and attack the full size goal.
Once a goal is scored or the ball goes out of play, the next 3 attackers start.
Picture:
Want to see the closest player pressing the ball quickly, whilst the other defending teams provide cover and balance in positions that are able to either intercept or quickly engage if the ball is passed to an attacking team mate. Want to see communication from the defending team.
Technical Detail:
Fast, slow, get low
When the tackle is made though proper body shape and technique
Connect fully with the ball where possible with locked ankles to be committed.

Emergency Defending Function
Organisation:
Based on the players available, only want 13 for this practice, so set up a1v1 with small goals and ask Lee to support that. These players can be rotated into the function if required.
Managing the opposition: Midfield 4 and front 2. Wide midfielders stay as wide as you can, as we are working in the centre of the pitch, this would be as narrow as you would be in a game, so stay wide.
Defending team: Playing 4-5-1, back 4 and 2 holding midfielders and a 10 involved in this practice
Contingency: -1 player remove small pitch and add a defender for the orange team
-2 players remove the small game and set up practice as above
Primary players:
Centre Backs
Secondary players
Full backs
Tertiary players
Holding midfielders
Player Selection:
Defending team
GK - Zach
Back 4 - Tom, George, Jack (RB), Michael (LB)
Midfield - Charlie, Thomas, Arya
Attacking team
Strikers - Oliver, Harvey
Midfielders - Evan, Riley, tyler, Jack Mc

First pass being quickly pressured. As soon as the ball is played in from the coach to one of the midfielders, then want to see pressure being put on the ball, with the correct technique, not diving in stopping them from playing forwards.
On the ball. closest player presses. Can the angle of the press, stop balls forward?
Near the ball: Are the other midfielders stopping passes into the opposition midfielder? It will be 2v1 in the middle area so are the defending team talking to each other about who will pick up their midfielder, if they are high then should be the other 6, if they are deeper then maybe the 10 and leave the 6 to screen the striker, but needs to be communicated so everyone is clear.
Away from the ball: Are the defenders in a good position in relation to position of the ball? Nearside centre half should be tight and far shoulder to prevent a ball inside that the striker can turn and hit first time. Opposite side centre half should be ball side of their man to intercept if pass is played. Fullbacks should be a good distance from their wingers, and inside.

When one of the wide players gets the ball (and in a game due to the space we have set up is more inside than wide) how do the defenders react
On the ball
Full back should engage
- Distance to man
- Watch the ball, not the man
- Show outside
Near the ball
- Nearest centre hald should provide cover, ball side of the attacker in case fullback gets beat 1v1, but close enough to intercept any pass into the striker
- Opposite side centre half should close the gaps and be compact with other CB, again ready to intercept any pass into the forwards.
- Opposite side FB should tuck in to provide balance
Away from the ball
- Positioning of the central midfielders to cut off any passing lanes to the opposition midfield
