Principle Practice – Defending the Final Third
Aligned to the Welsh Way Principles
Focus:
Understanding when and how to minimise space in the defensive third.
Dealing effectively with crosses and shots.
Protecting central areas when defending deep.
Organisation:
Area: 60m x 50m
Players:
Red Team (Out of Possession): GK + Back Four + 2 Midfielders + 1 Forward (GK-4-2-1 structure)
Blue Team (In Possession): 1 Central Midfielder, 2 Full-Backs, 2 Wide Players, #10 and #9 (attacking structure)
Format: 8v7 + GK
Duration: 4 x 3-minute blocks with 2-minute rest periods between blocks
Practice Explanation:
The Blue team build play from the server and aim to progress into the final third to create scoring opportunities.
The Red team focuses on applying defensive principles: compactness, protecting central areas, and dealing with crosses and shots.
If the Red team regains possession, they must counter-attack with speed and purpose, aiming to break lines and score into small-sided goals within a timed countdown managed by the coach.
Scoring System:
Block 1:
Blue team: 1 point for scoring from wide areas; 2 points for scoring through central areas.
Red team: 1 point for successfully progressing the ball into the shaded counter-attack zone.
Block 2:
Blue team: 2 points for scoring from a cross/wide play; 1 point for goals from central attacks.
Red team: 1 point for scoring after a counter-attack that breaks the defensive lines.
Key Coaching Focus:
Compact and organised defensive shape.
Delaying and denying entry into dangerous spaces.
Defending the box with priority on stopping crosses and protecting the goal.
Fast transitions from defence to attack upon regaining possession.

Small-Sided Game – Defending the Final Third
Session Focus: Out of Possession – Defending Central Spaces, Dealing with Crosses, Protecting the Box
Organisation:
Pitch Size: 70m x 50m with tapered sides (adjust based on players’ age and physical capacity).
Format: 9v9 including 2 goalkeepers.
Structure:
Reds: GK-4-2-1-1 (Missing wide players from a 4-2-3-1).
Blues: GK-1-3-3-1 (Missing a CB and CM from a 4-3-3).
Timing: 3 x 4-minute periods, with 2 x 1-minute rest intervals.
Practice Detail:
Blues must penetrate centrally or from wide areas before scoring.
Reds work on defensive third principles:
Defending tighter, deeper, and narrower.
Denying central play and protecting the box.
On winning possession, Reds must expand quickly, counter-attack by breaking lines, and score against a mobile goal under a managed countdown by the coach.
Focus remains on coaching the Reds out of possession, refining behaviours from previous practices.
How the Practice Progresses:
Minutes 10–15:
Reds defend tighter and deeper, protecting central spaces.
Blues encouraged to attack centrally – double goals if they score centrally.
Minutes 15–20:
Reds must defend higher up the pitch, applying earlier pressure.
Blues to create wide overloads (2v1s against full-backs) – double goals for goals from crosses.
Minutes 20–25:
Blues can attack freely (central or wide).
Reds must adapt and defend any scenario presented.
The coach must monitor players' responses and provide interventions if principles or timings break down.
Scoring System:
Blues:
1 goal for central finishes.
2 goals for scoring from crosses/wide areas.
Reds:
1 goal for a successful counter-attack breaking lines.
Challenges, Conditions, and Targets:
Full width available but play remains within the tapered defensive area.
Maintain previously set defensive principles.
Blue full-backs (yellow bibs) managed to support or create wide overloads, progressing from supporting behind to advanced positions to create 2v1s.
Final phase: Blues combine problems (support behind and 2v1s) requiring Reds to adapt defensively.
Key Coaching Points:
Out of Possession (Reds):
Force play into predictable, less dangerous areas.
Limit box entries and deny shooting opportunities.
Defend the penalty area tightly and compactly.
Maintain a narrow defensive structure.
Leave the furthest players when appropriate.
Prevent switching of play whenever possible.
In Possession (Reds - Counter-Attack):
Play through, around, or over opponents as appropriate.
Ball speed and quality must support quick transitions.
Exploit width and depth immediately.
