Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition)

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Primary Focus:
Understand when and how to defend against overloads by protecting central spaces and supporting teammates around the ball
Organization:
Same practice layout
5v5 + 2 neutral wide players
Area: 25 x 20
Wide channels on both sides
Explanation:
Team in possession attempts to:
Use wide neutrals to create overloads
Combine quickly to attack
Team out of possession attempts to:
stop overloads
protect central spaces
Delay attack
Win possession and transition quickly
Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
Progressions:
Add extra defender temporarily
Reduce touch restrictions for attackers
Increase attacking speed with time limit
Regressions:
Add extra defender temporarily
Reduce size of wide channels
Limit attacking touches
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Challenges:
Can defenders recognize overloads early?
Can they support quickly around the ball?
Can they protect central areas while defending wide overloads?
Conditions/Constraints:
Defenders gain: 3 pts for interception in overload area
2 pts for forcing play backwards
1 pt for forcing play wide without penetration
Neutral players remain 1-2 secs. on the ball
Targets:
Win the ball and score in mini goal = 3pts
Force play backwards = 2pts
Force play into wide channel with no penetration = 1 pt
Technical:
Pressing technique
Defensive body shape
Interceptions
Tackling
Tactical:
Protect central areas
Delay overload
Force play away from danger
Leave furthest player
Technique:
Defending the Overload:
1. Press quickly
2. Delay attack if outnumbered
3. Protect central passing lanes
4. Wait for defensive support
Supporting Around the Ball (Individual +1):
1. Provide cover behind pressure
2. Protect dangerous passing lanes
3. Stay compact and connected
Individual +1
On the ball: Can you delay and force play away from danger?
Around the ball: Can you provide cover and protext central space?

Creating and Exploiting Overloads (In-Possession)
Primary Focus:
Understand when and how to create and exploit overloads to progress forward and create goalscoring opportunities
Organization:
12 players total
5v5 + 2 neutral wide players
Area: 25 x 20
2 mini goals or 2 goals with GKs
Wide channels (3-4m) on each side
Neutral players operate in wide channels only
Explanation:
Team in possession uses neutral wide players to: create overloads in wide areas, combine quickly, progress forward and score
If possession is lost: immediate transtion, opposition attacks opposite goal
Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
Progressions:
Inside players = 2 sec. limit
Wide neutrals = 1 touch only
Add time limit to attack after entering wide channel
Regressions:
Increase width of channels
Add extra neutral player
Allow unlimited touches
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Challenges:
Can you recognize the overload quickly?
Can you find the spare player?
Can you combine quickly yo exploit the overload?
Conditions/Constraints:
Neutral wide players = 1-2 secs. on the ball
Goals count double if overload is used before scoring
Encourage overlaps/underlaps in wide areas
Targets:
Goal after overload combination = 3pts
Goal = 2pts
Successful overlap/underlap = 1 pt
Technical:
Passing quality
Dribbling into space
Receiving on the move
Combination play
Tactical:
Find spare player
Create overloads
Use width and depth
Overlap/underlap timing
Key Coaching Points:
Find the spare player
Exploit the overload quickly
Make the pitch big
Use overlaps and underlaps
Move the ball quickly
Technique:
Exploiting the Overload:
1. Recognize numerical advantage
2. Commit defender
3. Pass or dribble at correct moment
4. Support beyond the ball
Supporting the Ball (Individual +1)
1. Create angle of support
2. Overlap or underlap at correct timing
3. Stay connected to play
Individual +1
On the Ball: Can you recognize and exploit the overload?
Around the Ball:
Can you support with overlap/underlap movement?
