Description

Small group technical practice - players improving their ability to put a bend or curve on the ball, exploring different ways of manipulating the delivery strike & the way they approach & contact the ball.

Ideal in groups of 3 although more can participate when space is limited & you can put 2 balls in a group of 6 if need be. 1/4 pitch is ideal for Adult players but make it smaller for younger groups.

Animation 1

  • 3 players working lengthways in grid 1 at each end & bouncer in the middle.
  • play a mixture of passes some end player to other end player, some played into & back from bouncer.
  • some balls will need to be controlled before passing, others can be passed 1st touch whilst the ball is rolling.
  • each time you pass the ball try to put a curve or bend on the ball either going right to left or left to right.
  • to apply a bend or curve the ball needs to be spinning, the ball will curve in the direction of its spin
  • to make a ball bend or curve you need to strike the ball with more force on one side.
  • players should attempt to put a curve on each pass either right to left or left to right.
  • try to use both feet, practicing striking the ball with inside & outside of feet. the angle you approach the ball will usually be different from inside to outside of foot.
  • if bending from right to left strike the ball on the right side of centre pushing across the ball to add spin.
  • if bending from left to right strike the ball on the left side of centre pushing across the ball to add spin.
  • follow through to gain maximum ball contact & impart spin
  • attacking the ball at an angle will add body rotation through your delivery strike & should help you gain more spin.
  • hit under the ball slightly if you wish to gain elevation.
  • Progression: crossing/chipping - working across field either receiving a pass in front of you/running with the ball along the end line or using a stationary ball can you deliver a cross (high or low) or lofted ball to the player at the far end.
  • try to put a curve or bend on your delivery, practice with both feet if you can, bending the ball both ways.
  • hitting under the ball with more of your toe will generate lift but less power & curve.
  • hitting under the ball & following through around the ball with more of your laces  will generate lift but more power & curve will be added.

  • Run or dribble the ball & try to put a curve on the ball when you strike it as you travel.
  • Practice planting your standing foot at different angles & distances to the ball, & see how it affects the strike & spin off the ball.
  • Practice contacting the ball with different parts of the foot when you strike it & see how this affects your delivery.
