OOP#3 — COUNTERPRESS (6 SECONDS)
Main Objective:
Immediately regain possession within 6 seconds after losing the ball by collapsing around the loss zone, closing passing lanes, and forcing play backward or into pressure.
Organisation:
Pitch: 40×35m transition zone.
Teams: 7v7 + GK (or 8v8 if needed).
Blue = Out of Possession (Counterpress).
Yellow = In Possession (Transition to Attack).
Ball always starts with attacking action → upon loss, Blue have 6 seconds to win it back.
Wide “escape lanes” coned to show opposition transition options.
Game Detail:
Yellow attempt to break away within 6 seconds through outside lanes or via bounce through pivot.
Blue must:
Sprint to the ball loss
Close nearest lanes
Collapse central spaces
Delay the opponent
Regain cleanly
Regain within 6s = 1 point.
If Yellow escape outside or play forward under control = 1 point.
Instructions:
Upon loss:
Nearest 3 press the ball (press–support–cover triangle).
Far-side winger tucks inside to close central lane.
Double pivot squeezes aggressively to win second ball.
Back line holds but steps in when ball travels backwards.
If regain: immediate 3-pass combination to secure possession.

Progression:
1. Add Yellow target mini-goals for escape.
2. Limit Blue’s touch count after regain to encourage quick secure play.
3. Add neutral player to support Yellow transition (increases difficulty).
4. Make central escape forbidden → must recover width
Triggers:
Bad pass / bad touch
Intercepted cutback
Poor body shape from opponent
Ball carrier facing own goal
Opponent receives with no support behind
Key Behaviours:
Immediate reaction (first 1–2 seconds decisive).
Sprint → decelerate → close angle.
Nearest player presses; second arrives to lock inside lane; third prevents escape.
Collective shrink of space around ball.
Don’t dive in — delay if regain isn’t possible immediately.
Communication: “LOCK”, “CLOSE”, “TRAP LEFT/RIGHT”.
Coaching Points:
Reaction speed after loss is non-negotiable.
Body shape to force backward.
Press in triangle, not in straight lines.
Arrive when ball arrives.
Protect half-space and inside channels.
Recover distances quickly after the press
