U9 Playing out from the back exercise (25 mins)

Practice Objective:

  • Exercise designed to encourage players to think about where the space is when trying to play out from the back, working the both the team trying to play out (BP) and the team in BPO.

Set up;

  • 1 large goal, 2 mini goals
  • Area 30m x 30m. Divide the pitch up as shown.
  • Flat discs for marking
  • bag of balls
  • 2 sets of bibs
  • 1 bag of balls

Practice Explanation:

  • Aim of the exercise is for the players in yellow (BP - the 6 players) to be able to work the ball from the GK, maintain possession and progress to score in the mini goals
  • The team in BPO, the red team, must try and win the ball as quickly as possible and score past the GK in the large goal
  • Play always starts from the GK - ensure all of the balls are beside the goal for quick restarts.
  • Red team must retreat behind the 10m line when play is restarting and may only occupy 2 of the 3 zones. As soon as the GK plays the ball, they can press.
  • 25 mins (7x3m/3minR/1 min Changeover)

Coaching Points

  • Can full backs take up wide positions quickly? Body shape open, and good first touch into space.
  • Attacking team are not able to occupy all of the zones - therefore where is the space? Can players identify which side they can overload on?
  • Striking the ball and ball speed - can we play quickly and directly to our team mates?
  • First touch into space - do we need to pass immediately, is our first touch good enough to open up the space to see our options?
  • Can we utilise the 2 player advantage and create overloads and 1-2 passing triangles.
  • If the BPO teams press is good - can we recycle and switch through the GK?
  • BPO - can we press quickly and win the ball back within the defensive third - what reward do we get for winning it back quickly and near the goal? Scoring opportunities.
