Shielding Practice

Split players into groups of 3

One person on the edge of the square passes to his teammate who has a defender behind him. The player will look to shield the ball from the defender for a few seconds before passing back to his teammate. Repeat a few times before rotating players.

Progression: Player that receives the ball looks to shield and then spin around the defender, trying to dribble through the other side of the square

Progression: When the player on the edge of the square passes into player it becomes a 2v1 looking to dribble the ball through the opposite side of the square. Focus would be on completing a overlap core move

Coaching Points:

  • Body/leg in between the ball and defender to HIDE the ball and make it difficult for the defender to access the ball
  • Use of the arm to keep the defender away when hiding/shielding the ball
  • Knees bent and shoulder pointing at the defender

Back to Goal 1v1

Players line up either side of the goal with one side being attackers the other being defenders

GK starts with the ball and rolls the ball out towards the other side of the playing area. Attacker looks to run onto the ball, turn and score. Defender waits one second after the ball is rolled before going to press. If they win it back they look to score by dribbling through either of the end gates

The focus of this practice is players being able to turn under pressure but hiding the ball away from the defender at the same time

This progresses into a 2v2 scenario where the focus should be on our combinations and core moves (wall pass and overlap)

Extra points for successful wall passes, overlaps and skill moves

Coach can restart the game with a player gaining the ball in the final third but is not able to score until he passes, encouraging the player to hold up the play and hide the ball in the process
