Skill 1 (15 mins)
This activity is designed to have players learn basic passing technique with the inside of the foot while introducing several techniques for receiving by providing lots of repetition.
Equipment needed
10-12 cones
10-12 balls
4-8 bibs one
Set up
Mark out pitch, 5m in from usual Touchlines.
Have team 1(blue) lined up around half way, one player about half way in between on the wide position(P2), P2 cant enter the coned area and has to stay wide. Team 2(red) start just wide of the goal.
Instruction
When play starts, Blue player(P1) runs with the ball, and then plays a 1-2 with P2, in behind the defender, P1's aim is to get a shot away. 1 Red player is to close the space, and then choose between cutting out the pass or following the runner.
Defender swaps every reset. P1 goes to position of P2 and P2 goes to the back of the Line.
Progression/Regression
Progression: allow P1 the choice whether to pass or try to take the defender on alone
Progression: The players can only take one touch before passing.
Progression: Add a second defender
Progression: Add a P3 position on the opposite wing to give a choice of direction.
Regression: Defender can only press and not tackle.
Challenges, Conditions and Targets
Challenges would be to keep scores on goals.
Conditions to start would be that P2 has to make a quick pass, Interventions could be used for more technical players to play a first time pass.
targets are to improve movement and runs off the ball for attackers, and to improve defending under overload conditions for the defenders. In this scenario to encourage the following of the run rather than the cutting out of the pass as P2 cant enter the field of play or shoot.
After 3 minutes swap P2 to right hand side .
Then after another 6 minutes swap reds and blues roles.

Small sided games
Have 2 coned side-lines, 5 yards in from the touchline, this is a neutral zone. one neutral player is in each neutral zone.
split the rest between 2 teams.
Only the neutral players can be in the neutral zone.
the neutral players play both sides, but cant be tackled, they can be passed to by both teams and must return the pass to the same team they received it from.
Last ten minutes of the session, remove neutral zone and put the neutral players onto a team each and play all in.
Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
Allow the neutral players to enter the field of play, once they are in the field of play, they can be tackled.
Create an area in the middle of the pitch where their are only 3 touches per player, to encourage moving the ball. This will also re-enforce the need for pressing and organisation off the ball for defenders, and movement and quick passing for attackers.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
If one 2 is played with winger in the neutral zone and then a goal is scored in the same sequence of play, its worth 2 goals.
No throw ins, play starts with neutral zone winger.
Swap the neutral zone wingers every few minutes.
