This activity places players in a game environment where they are set up to win the ball back from the opposition and counterattack quickly to a waiting target.
SET UP: Use half your normal pitch. Set up a 20x25-yard central box between the penalty area and the halfway line, splitting the box in two. Split the players into two even teams plus a keeper. The Yellow defending team has four defensive players in the center box and two wingers higher up the pitch. Split the attacking players into waiting groups on opposite sides. The keeper plays for the attacking team.
INSTRUCTIONS: The coach plays a ball into first group of two attackers, (Black) who enter the center box and try to dribble through it to a target. The four defenders (Yellow) try to stop the penetration by winning back the ball. The player who wins it must make a good pass into the winger, who has three touches to score. Play four three-minute games.
Coaching Points: Defenders closing down space to get touch tight. Quick Transition & outlet to the wingers or forward player. The defending team wins the ball back from the attackers and immediately look to counterattack
Variations & Constraints: Change focus or add in a Center Forward. Have two defenders in the box join the counter attack, and turn the counter attack into a 6x2. Add in a Central Defender to the Attacking team. (Black)

The concept of this session is to encourage a quick transition from the offensive side of the ball to the defensive side of the ball.
- Players, 1,2, & 3 from the Pink will start the attack & Players A, & B from the red team will defend.
- Once the 3 Pink attacking players cross the halfway point of the grid, players 4, & 5 from the pink team will slide in behind to act as defenders when the counter attack comes at them.
- Once the sequence of attack is over (pink is dispossessed of the ball or it goes out of bounds) Players 1,2 & 3 will leave the grid.
- When the ball is won by red or the play is dead, player C from red will join in the counter attack with players A, & B.
- Players 4, & 5 will now defend against the Red counter attack.
The continuous rotation of counter attacking and defending repeats.
Focus: Defending players sliding in behind attacking team mates. Quick transition from defending to attacking.

SET UP: Have the team form a circle, with one player in the middle. ( be sure there is enough room for 5 - 10 yard passing depending on ability).
INSTRUCTION: Player A will pass to player B. Once the ball has been passed, player C will make a run in behind player B. Player B will lay off the ball into the path of player C. (player A will take the spot of player C on the outside of the circle. The process will repeat itself with player C in the middle.
Coaching Points: ( Anticipation) Have the player making the run, do so when the ball is passed from the middle, not after. This can simulate a player making a run onto a ball.
