Specific Practice/Defending the Overload (out of possession)/Welsh Way Principles Understand when and how to defend against the opposition having a numerical advantage.
Organisation/Area Size:3rd of a full sized pitch.2 Big sized goal. White lines to be marked with flat markers (3 zones) and outline of the pitch.9v8 blue (attacking team) playing in a 1-4-2-3-1 formation missingtheir 2 centre backs and yellow(defending team) playing in a 1-4-3-3 formation missing their left forward, right forward player and acentre midfielder.
Explanation: Both small goals has been removed and both teams are scoring in the big goals. The blue team playing with 8 outfield players (and a goalkeeper) and the yellow playing with 7 outfield players (and a goalkeeper). The blue team is to continue to focus on the challenge of finding the spare player in the game. Normal game with throwins and goal kicks. If the ball goes off for a corner play from the opposite side goalkeeper as a goal kick. The yellow team which the coach will continue to work with on the defending principles of defending against the oppositions numerical advantage.
How: The coach will use the opportunity in the game to observe and when a scenario occurs he/she can intervene and stop the game to highlight his/her observations for the players to visualise his/her objectives and the outcomes he/she wants to achieve when defending against a numerical advantage. An example of this would be when he observes the yellows defending but are not defending as a unit,or not defending 2 zones by staying compact and narrow.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets: Both teams are scoring in the big goals. Award 2 goals if the blue team manage to score from either a wide area or middle area where they created a numerical advantage to score. Award 2 goals for the yellow team if they score within 10 seconds of gaining possession of the ball (a transition).Team out of possession to defend 2 zones.T eam in possession are to be in all 3 zones. Leave the furthest player .Apply pressure on the ball quickly. Limit the number of touches for the blue team. Scenario 1 - Yellows are losing 1-0 with 5 minutes left of the game. Scenario 2 - Yellows are winning 1-0 with 5 minutes left of the game.
Key Coaching Points: In Possession: Make pitch big. Weight of the pass. Limit number of touches. Movement on and off the ball. Recognise where the spare player is. Interchange positions. Speed of attack. Out of Possession: Pressure on the ball. Defence and body position. Distance between units. Delay the attack. Protect central areas by defending compact and narrow. Leave the furthest player. Recognise opponents movement.

Specific Practice/Defending the Overload (out of possession)/Welsh Way Principles Understand when and how to defend against the opposition having a numerical advantage.
Organisation/Area Size:3rd of a full sized pitch.1 Big sized goal.2 Small sized goals. White lines to be marked with flat markers (3 zones) and outline of the pitch. Shaded area to be marked with flat markers.8v7 blue (attacking team) playing in a 1-4-2-3-1 formation missing their goalkeeper and 2 centre backs and yellow(defending team)playing in a 1-4-3-3 formation missing their 3 forward players.4x4 minute blocks with 1 minute break in-between each block.
Explanation: The objective of the blue team is to score in the big goals by creating overloads in wide areas and in central areas which will be broken down into separate blocks. The yellow team is playing with 1 less outfield player and their objective is to understand how to defend against a numerical overload in wide areas and central areas and there target once gaining possession of the ball is to score in either of the small goals.
How: The coach will manage the blue team and focus on the yellow team. The coach will challenge the blue team to create width in the wide areas and create overloads in those areas linking play with the midfield. The coach will encourage the blue team to have a numerical advantage in wide areas and central areas based on where the ball is. The coach will focus on the yellow team and how they defend against the overload based on the challenges he has giving to the blue team. The coach will focus on distances between each unit and how they can defend the spaces by leaving the furthest player, protecting central areas and apply pressure on the ball at the right moment and how to defend against the overloads which the opposition has created Block 1 - Only 1 yellow player is allowed to defend in the wide zones (yellows should defend only 2 zones). Highlighted zone is an area which yellows are restricted in (2 centre midfielders). Blue team to create overloads in the wide areas. Block 2 - Allow an extra player to support the player defending in the wide zone. Highlighted area (no restrictions). Allow the centremidfielders to support the defence byleaving their zone.Block 3 - Blue team to focus on creating overloads in the midfield. This will allow the coach to work on defending the overload in central areas and demonstrate how to force the opposition to play wide. If unable to do so, the coach can demonstrate how the back line supports the midfield when this happens .Block 4 - Yellow team to defend higher and apply pressure. Blue team challenge to 3 touches max to move the ball quickly.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets: Players are conditioned to playing in their zones (yellows) in first block, blues conditioned to having 1 blue player wide zone as an outlet player causing problems for the defending team. Limit the touches of the blue team. If yellow have too much of the ball apply a 10 second countdown to score. Leave the furthest player and stay compact (protect the middle).Award extra goals for blue team when challenging them to score in wide areas or central areas (this will allow for this to happen regularly).Award 3 goals if yellow manage to score in the small goals.
