Organisation

  • Area: 15x15m with an internal 12x12m square (adaptable)

  • Players: 10 total: 5 Attackers (Yellow), 3 Defenders (Blue), 2 Target Players (Green)

  • Target players are positioned on opposite sides of the internal square, they must always remain directly opposite each other

  • Practice begins with the attacking team (Yellow) keeping possession inside the internal area, looking to connect passes with either outside target player

Objective
  • The attacking team aims to maintain possession and play into one of the outside target players to score 1 point.
  • Once a target player receives the ball, it should be transferred back into the internal square quickly and then moved toward the opposite target player to encourage switching play and quick transitions.
  • Defenders earn 1 point for each interception or forced turnover.

Progressions

  • Target Rotation: After a target player receives and returns the ball, they must move to a new side, keeping the opposite positioning rule in place.

  • Role Exchange: Once an attacker passes into a target player, they swap roles, the passer becomes the new target.

  • Dribble Escape Bonus: Defenders who win possession and dribble out of the internal area earn 2 points.

Teaching the 'Why' (Built into Practice)

  • Read the Picture
Encourage scanning before and after the pass. Ask: “Where’s the next available outlet?” and “How early can you recognise the open side?” to build forward-thinking awareness.

  • Purpose in the Pass
Reinforce that each pass must have intent. Challenge: “Are you connecting just to keep it, or are you moving the opposition to create space?”

  • Change the Rhythm
Develop players’ sense of tempo, “Can we play quickly to exploit the open target, or recycle when the picture’s not clear?” Linking pace of play with recognition sharpens collective decision-making.
